TOWN OF MOUNT PLEASANT, SOUTH CAROLINA HISTORICAL COMMISSION MEETING MARCH 10, 2022 MINUTES Present: Deborah Sutherland, Chair, Brian Blalock, Courtney Theis, Danielle Cox, Pamela Gabriel, William Hine, Gibson Hopper. Staff: Kate Miller, Aaron Bennett, Lynnette Lynes Ms. Sutherland called the meeting to order at 8:02 am. I. Approval of Agenda Mr. Hopper moved for approval of the agenda. Ms. Theis seconded the motion. All in favor. II. Approval of Minutes – February 14, 2022 Ms. Cox moved for approval of the minutes. Mr. Hopper seconded the motion. All in favor. III. Public Comment There being no public comment, Ms. Sutherland continued with the agenda. IV. Staff Update Ms. Miller reviewed the staff update with the Commission. The Commission discussed having a ceremony or Black History Month presentation to honor Mr. Edmund Jenkins. V. Presentation and Request by Citizen about Signage in Traffic Circle Ms. Miller stated that a previous Commission member is working on the possibility of renaming the traffic circle at Rifle Range Road/Six Mile Road and is asking for support from the Commission on this effort. Ms. Miller stated that they should be at next month’s meeting. VI. Committee Action Items A. Organization and Administration Committee 1. Budget Update Ms. Miller reviewed the updated budget with the Commission. B. Historical Markers and Interpretation Committee 1. Update and Action on the Grace Bridge and signage Ms. Gabriel updated the Commission on the text and stated that revisions are being completed. Historical Commission March 10, 2022 Page 2 of 3 2. Discuss Jennie Moore School text Ms. Gabriel stated that the draft text has been completed. 3. Discuss Cresco Award Ms. Gabriel stated that she would like to nominate Ms. Susannah Smith-Myles as a recipient of the Cresco Award. The Commission agreed to take a vote next month. C. Special Collection and Research Committee Mr. Hopper stated that an oral history interview has been scheduled with Ms. Ann Edwards later this month. D. Tourism and Community Outreach Committee 1. Discuss and Action on Blessing of the Fleet Mr. Blalock reviewed the outreach plans for the Blessing of the Fleet Festival. Mr. Blalock moved for approval of funds for the Blessing of the Fleet Festival not to exceed $100. Ms. Gabriel seconded the motion. All in favor. E. Marketing Committee Ms. Cox stated that the focus has been on QFF postings. F. Black History Month Committee 1. Discuss Black History Month Mr. Hine updated that Commission on the Black History Month events and how well they were attended. He suggested that the number of locations could be increased for next year and could also include a presentation on Edmund Jenkins. He further suggested that additional events celebrating other significant historical events should be considered as well such as Founders’ Day when Town was incorporated, National Women’s Month, etc. The Commission discussed how additional events could be added throughout the year and how Black History Month could be expanded. VII. Discussion of Next Month’s Agenda Items The Commission agreed that the following items should be included on next month’s agenda: ➢ Presentation on traffic circle signage ➢ Cresco Award Historical Commission March 10, 2022 Page 3 of 3 ➢ Grace Bridge signage ➢ Jennie Moore signage ➢ Budget update ➢ Blessing of the Fleet ➢ Unveiling for Friendship AME Church marker There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:57 am.
