TOWN OF MOUNT PLEASANT, SOUTH CAROLINA HISTORIC DISTRICT PRESERVATION COMMISSION JUNE 9, 2022 MINUTES Present: Bryan Blalock, Danielle Cox, Chair, Pamela Gabriel, William Hine, Gibson Hopper Absent: Courtney Theis, Deborah Sutherland, Chair Staff: Kate Miller, Aaron Bennett, Jane Yager-Baumrind Ms. Miller called the meeting to order at 8:04 am and stated that a temporary chair would need to be appointed. Mr. Hopper moved to approve Bryan Blalock as temporary chair. Ms. Gabriel Seconded the motion. All in favor. I. Approval of Agenda Ms. Cox moved to approve the agenda; Mr. Hopper seconded the motion. All in favor. II. Approval of Minutes – May 12, 2022 Ms. Gabriel moved to approve the minutes; Ms. Cox seconded the motion. All in favor. III. Public Comment There being no comments, Mr. Blalock continued with the agenda. IV. Staff Update Ms. Miller reviewed the staff update with the Commission. V. Committee Action Items A. Organization and Administration Committee 1. Budget Update This item was deferred to next month’s meeting. Historical Commission June 9, 2022 Page 2 of 3 2. Discuss Procedures and Code of Conduct This item was deferred to next month’s meeting B. Historical Markers and Interpretation Committee 1. Update and Action on the Grace Bridge and signage 2. Discuss and Action on Jennie Moore School text (Commission proposed text and Staff proposed text) Ms. Gabriel reviewed update on the marker text with the Commission. Ms. Gabriel moved to defer approval of Grace Bridge Signage text and layout until received back from communications department. Ms. Cox seconded the motion. All in favor. Ms. Cox moved to defer approval of the Jennie Moore School text. Mr. Blalock seconded the motion. All in favor. 3. Discuss and Action on signage and dedication for traffic circles Ms. Gabriel reviewed the names and the Commission discussed. Mr. Blalock moved to recommend the following name suggestions, Freedman’s Circle and Seewee People’s Circle to replace the original recommendation of Black History Month Circle. Mr. Hopper seconded the motion. All in favor. 4. Discuss and Vote on Cresco Award Ms. Miller reviewed the Cresco Award and discussed with the Commission. Mr. Hine moved to approve 2022 Cresco Award to be given to Ms. Suzannah Smith Miles. Ms. Cox seconded the motion. All in favor. Historical Commission June 9, 2022 Page 3 of 3 C. Special Collection and Research Committee D. Tourism and Community Outreach Committee E. Marketing Committee F. Black History Month Committee No Report VI. Discussion of Next Month’s Agenda Items Mr. Blalock moved to have the following items included on the next agenda: ➢ updated budget ➢ procedures/code of conduct ➢ Grace Bridge marker text ➢ Jennie Moore marker text ➢ Discussion of an intern for history room.
