TOWN OF MOUNT PLEASANT, SOUTH CAROLINA HISTORICAL COMMISSION DECEMBER 8, 2022 MINUTES Present: Deborah Sutherland, Chair, Courtney Theis, Brian Blalock, William Hine, Gibson Hopper, Danielle Cox, Pam Gabriel. Staff: Kate Miller, Aaron Bennett Ms. Sutherland called the meeting to order at 8:04 am I. Approval of Agenda Ms. Cox moved to approve the agenda. Mr. Blalock seconded the motion. All in favor. II. Approval of November 10, 2022 Minutes Ms. Cox moved to approve the minutes. Mr. Blalock seconded the motion. All in favor. III. Public Comment Being no public comment, Ms. Sutherland, closed public comment. IV. Staff Update- Ms. Miller reviewed the staff update with the commission. V. Discuss 2023 meeting schedule The Commission agreed to keep the current schedule and discussed the possibility of skipping the August meeting and moving the January meeting up to January 5th from January 12th. Ms. Cox moved to move the January 12th meeting to January 5th. Mr. Blalock seconded the motion. All in favor. VI. Approve Christ Church Lines text for Liberty Hill Farms Mr. Hine objected due to uncertainty of the Commission’s role or authority in approving sign text, wording, and factual errors. Ms. Cox moved to defer action on Christ Church Lines text for Liberty Hill Farms until the January meeting. Mr. Blalock seconded the motion. All in favor. VII. Committee Action Items A. Organization and Administration Committee 1. Update and Action on Budget Ms. Theis provided update on Commission budget. Ms. Cox moved for approval to increase Black History Month Historical Commission December 8, 2022 Page 2 of 3 committee budget to $3500. Mr. Blalock seconded the motion. All in favor. 2. Discuss and Vote on Commission Directory Ms. Theis informed the Commission there was no update and only a brief biography was needed. The commission agreed to defer until next month. 3. Discussion and vote on Proposed Marker Program Ms. Theis informed the Commission that the proposed marker program is still in progress. Mr. Blalock moved to defer approval on the proposed marker program. Mr. Hopper seconded the motion. All in favor. B. Historical Markers and Interpretation Committee Ms. Gabriel updated the Commission on the progress of marker program and that additional ideas for new signs are needed. C. Special Collection and Research Committee Mr. Hopper stated that an intern has been hired for the Archive Room. D. Tourism and Community Outreach Committee Mr. Blalock updated the Commission on the holiday parade. E. Marketing Committee Ms. Cox provided an update to the commission. F. Black History Month Committee 1. Update and action on Black History Month events Mr. Hine provided an update on the Black History month event schedule. Ms. Cox moved to defer action on Black History Month plans. Mr. Blalock seconded the motion. All in favor. VIII. Discussion of Next Month’s Agenda Items The Commission agreed to next month’s agenda items as follows: ➢ Discussion and action on Christ Church Lines Text ➢ Discussion and Action on Budget ➢ Discussion and Action on Directory ➢ Discussion and Action on Marker Program Historical Commission December 8, 2022 Page 3 of 3 There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:59 am.
