TOWN OF MOUNT PLEASANT, SOUTH CAROLINA HISTORICAL COMMISSION MARCH 14, 2024 MINUTES Present: Deborah Sutherland, Chair, Brian Blalock, Courtney Theis, Danielle Cox, Pamela Gabriel, William Hine, Gibson Hopper. Staff: Kate Miller, Maddox Allen, Lynnette Lynes Ms. Sutherland called the meeting to order at 8:09 am. I. Approval of Agenda Ms. Gabriel moved for approval of the agenda. Ms. Cox seconded the motion. All in favor. II. Approval of Minutes – January 11, 2024 and February 8, 2024 Ms. Cox moved for approval of the minutes. Ms. Theis seconded the motion. All in favor. III. Public Comment Ms. Debbie Mollycheck stated that she is donating a notebook on her family history to the Town and gave a brief history for the Commission. She stated that the notebook includes original land documents and photographs. There being no further comments, Ms. Sutherland closed public comment and continued with the agenda. IV. History Room Intern Update and Action Ms. Allen updated the Commission on her work in the History Room. She stated that she is also working on an acquisition and procedure policy for the History Room. V. Staff Update Ms. Miller reviewed the staff update with the Commission. Historical Commission March 14, 2024 Page 2 of 3 VI. Committee Action Items A. Organization and Administration Committee 1. Update and possible action on Budget Ms. Theis updated the Commission on the budget. B. Historical Markers and Interpretation Committee 1. Discussion and possible action 4 Mile School Marker. Ms. Gabriel provided an update on the Four Mile School marker. The Commission agreed that there should be one sign that includes the school and the community. 2. Discussion of Richard Brown proposed marker Ms. Miller provided an update on the request for a historical marker for Richard Brown and stated that the African American settlement association would like to provide some input on the marker. C. Special Collection and Research Committee Report Mr. Hopper updated the Commission on the oral history projects and history room renovations. D. Marketing, Tourism, and Community Outreach Committee 1. Discussion and Possible Action on 1706 French and Spanish Invasion Project and Event Mr. Blalock updated the Commission on the event. He stated that additional funds would be needed for advertising and marketing. Mr. Hopper moved for approval of an additional $1,100 for advertising. Ms. Cox seconded the motion. All in favor. Discussion and possible action Women’s History Month Mr. Blalock and Mr. Hopper updated the Commission on efforts to add Women’s History Month as an event for the Historical Commission. 3. Discussion on SC250—No update 4. Discussion and Possible Action on Blessing of the Fleet Mr. Blalock reviewed the plans for the Blessing of the Fleet event to be held on April 28th. He stated that additional funds might be needed and would provide an update at the next meeting. E. Black History Month Mr. Hine provided an update on the Black History Month events held in February. He and Ms. Miller stated that they received positive feedback from the surveys completed on the events as well. VII. Discuss Next Month’s Agenda The Commission agreed that the following items should be included for next month’s agenda: ➢ Update and possible action on Budget ➢ Discussion and Possible Action on 1706 French and Spanish Invasion Project and Event ➢ Discussion and possible action on 4 Mile School Marker ➢ Discussion on SC250 ➢ Discussion and Possible Action on Blessing of the Fleet ➢ Discussion and action on History Room Policy and Procedure Manual There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 9:07 am.
