TOWN OF MOUNT PLEASANT, SOUTH CAROLINA HISTORICAL COMMISSION NOVEMBER 14, 2024 MINUTES Present: Deborah Sutherland, Chair, Brian Blalock, Danielle Cox, Duke Brown, William Hine, Janon German, Courtney Theis (entered at 8:09 am). Staff: Kate Miller, Lynnette Lynes Ms. Sutherland called the meeting to order at 8:06 am. I. Approval of Agenda Ms. Cox moved for approval of the agenda. Mr. Blalock seconded the motion. All in favor. II. Approval of Minutes – October 10, 2024 Ms. Cox moved for approval of the minutes. Mr. Blalock seconded the motion. All in favor. III. Public Comment There being no public comment, Ms. Sutherland continued with the agenda. IV. Staff Update Ms. Miller provided an update for the Commission. Mr. Hine moved for approval to postpone the Indigenous People event to next year. Ms. German seconded the motion. All in favor. Ms. Theis entered at this time (8:09 am). V. Discussion and Action on Cresco Award The Commission reviewed the applications. The Commission voted for the Gin House/Boone Hall Plantation as the 2024 Cresco Award recipient by secret ballot. Historical Commission November 18, 2024 Page 2 of 3 VI. Committee Action Items A. Organization and Administration Committee 1. Update and Possible Action on Budget Ms. Theis updated the Commission on the budget. B. Historical Markers and Interpretation Committee 1. Discussion on Historical Markers Ms. Miller reviewed the historical marker program with the Commission and the Commission discussed how to proceed. The Commission agreed that the Committee should continue the discussion and update the Commission on how they would like to proceed with the historical marker program. C. Special Collection and Research Committee 1. Discussion and possible action on oral history Ms. German updated the Commission on the oral history program. D. Marketing, Tourism and Community Outreach Committee 1. Update and Discussion on Phillips Tomb Mr. Hine updated the Commission on the project. 2. Discuss SC250 Mr. Blalock updated the Commission on possible SC250 events. He stated that a live encampment at Waterfront Park is tentatively scheduled for November 15 and 16, 2025. E. Black History Month Committee 1. Discussion and possible action on 2025 Black History Month events Mr. Brown updated the Commission on the proposed events: ➢ Plantation Singers—February 8th ➢ Ten Mile Settlement Community discussion—February 22nd Historical Commission November 18, 2024 Page 3 of 3 ➢ Movie night—February 1st or 15th; Afro Southern Film Festival participants or other local film artists with local history content ➢ Culinary event—February 1st or 15th; Gullah Cuisine at the H&R Sweet Shop or Gullah cuisine at the Miriam Brown Community Center Mr. Brown stated that more information would be available at the next meeting. VII. Discussion of Next Month’s Agenda Items The Commission agreed to include the following items on next month’s agenda: ➢ Update on budget ➢ Discussion and possible action on Black History Month ➢ Discussion on SC250 ➢ Discussion on Historical markers ➢ Oral history ➢ Discussion on possible archeological dig events and youth events There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 9:01 am.
