YOUTH ADVISORY COMMITTEE AGENDA MONDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2024, AT 5:30 PM COUNCIL CHAMBERS 206 NORTH MURPHY ROAD MURPHY, TEXAS 75094 NOTICE is hereby given of a meeting of the Youth Advisory Committee of the City of Murphy, Collin County, State of Texas, to be held on Monday, November 18, 2024, at Murphy Community Room for the purpose of considering the following items. The Youth Advisory Committee reserves the right to meet in Executive Session closed to the public at any time in the course of this meeting to discuss matters listed on the agenda, as authorized by the Texas Open Meetings Act, Texas Government Code, Chapter 551, including §551.071 (private consultation with the attorney for the City); §551.072 (discussing purchase, exchange, lease or value of real property); §551.074 (discussing personnel or to hear complaints against personnel); and §551.087 (discussing economic development negotiations). Kayla McFarland, Recreation Superintendent, called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. 2. Page 2 of 4 Youth Advisory Committee October 21, 2024 Assistant, Matt Foster, Director of Parks and Recreation and Cody Clark, Park Superintendent introduced themselves to the board and gave a brief description of what their role with the City of Murphy entails. The Youth Advisory Committee was able to go around the room and introduce themselves and provide a fun fact about themselves. Kayla McFarland, Recreation Superintendent also asked the board if there were any departments within the city they would be interested in learning more about. Finance, Police Department, Fire Department, City Council Meetings were the top of their list. 6. ELECTION OF OFFICERS A. Consider and/or act on nomination of Youth Advisory Committee Chair. COMMISSION ACTION: (Item 6.A.) APPROVED Anjana Vankayalapati moved to nominate herself as Chair. Andrew Dickenson seconded the motion. For: Unanimous. The motion carried by a vote of 8-0. B. Consider and/or act on nomination of Youth Advisory Committee Vice Chair. COMMISSION ACTION: (Item 6.B.) APPROVED Aiden Tran moved to nominate himself as Vice Chair. Anjana Vankayalapati seconded the motion. For: Aniya Jain, Aiden Tran, Kennedy Butler, Imani Yarbough, and Anjana Vankayalapati. Against: Akshaya Vankayalapati, Ishya Jain, and Andrew Dickenson. The motion carried by a vote of 5-3. COMMISSION ACTION: (Item 6.B.) DEFEATED. Andrew Dickenson moved to nominated himself as Vice Chair. Aniya Jain seconded the motion. Kennedy Butler seconded the motion. For: Unanimous. The motion carried by a vote of 8-0. D. Consider and/or act on nomination of Youth Advisory Committee Historian. The motion carried by a vote of 3-5. 7. STAFF REPORTS A. Update on upcoming events and projects. Kayla McFarland, Recreation Superintendent, updated the committee on several upcoming events organized by Murphy Parks and Recreation. She began by highlighting the Moonlight Movie Skelebration Trunk or Treat, scheduled for Friday, October 25th, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Murphy City Hall Complex. This event will feature a screening of The Addams Family movie, a costume contest, food, candy, and various activities. Kayla encouraged committee members to support the event by liking and following Murphy Parks and Recreation's social media pages and sharing posts to help spread the word, especially to the teen community. Next, Kayla shared details about the Murphy Campout, which will take place from Friday, November 15th, to Saturday, November 16th, at Murphy Central Park by the pond. This will be an overnight camping experience for local families, offering a chance for the community to come together outdoors. Lastly, she provided an update on Christmas in the Park, which will occur on Saturday, December 7th, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Murphy Central Park. This year, the event has been moved to the first Saturday in December instead of a weeknight. It will include craft vendors, reindeer, inflatables, a visit from Santa, and a tree lighting ceremony. Additionally, the morning will feature a 5K fun run, the Jingle Jog. Kayla emphasized the importance of promoting these events through social media and word of mouth, and she encouraged committee members to get involved in the volunteer efforts. B. Update on Parks projects. Cody Clark, Parks Superintendent, provided an update on the continued maintenance of local parks and playgrounds. He shared that the shade structure at Timbers Park is being replaced and a new tennis backboard will be installed there as well. At North Hill Park, repairs to the merry-go-round are planned. For the upcoming winter season, maintenance efforts will focus on tree trimming, painting, and general cleanup throughout the parks. 8.
