City Hall Council Chambers Present: Chair Deb Zahn, Councilor David Christian, Al Stabenow, Jeannie Leighty, Peter Baganz, Ron Brutlag and Building Official Ellwood Zabel Absent: Cara Knauf 1. CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order by Chair, Deb Zahn at 4:45 P.M. 2. APPROVE MINUTES 2.1) September 16, 2024 Meeting Mr. Brutlag made a nomination to approve the minutes of the September 16, 2024, meeting. The motion was seconded by Mr. Baganz and all voted aye. 3. DESIGN REVIEW 3.1) True Real Estate – Sign and Awning – 127 North Minnesota Street Mr. Zabel presented details of the request, including: • Owners: Oak and Pine Industries LLC of 60 Trail Drive, Mankato • Location: Old Guten Tag Haus, 127 North Minnesota Street • Occupant: True Real Estate • Proposed Sign and Awning: Gray awning with signage and grey bulkhead including the same gray color to cover the existing green stone at the bottom of the storefront. • Signage square foot allotment: 75 square feet. The proposed signage measures approximately 50 square feet. Signage for the windows will be on the inside of the glass. Coffee Keller will still have approximately 25 square feet for signage. Lewis Urick with AR Construction stated the following: • The existing corrugated steel will be eliminated. • Cement board will be installed and painted in place of the existing corrugated steel. • The signage will go up on the cement board. Page 2 of 4  • The green stone at the storefront will be removed since it’s already starting to crack. • The gray cement board will be installed over the spot where the green stone was originally placed. Ms. Leighty made a motion to approve the design review as presented. Mr. Christian seconded the motion, and all voted aye. The motion carried. 5. REPORTS FROM CITY AND CHAIR 5.1) City Report Mr. Zabel had nothing to report. 5.2) Chair Report Ms. Zahn asked Ms. Leighty to speak on the workshop that they both attended in Red Wing. Ms. Leighty spoke about the following: • The opening reception at the pottery museum. • The restored Sheldon Theater. • Getting Main Street and Heritage Preservation working together. • Preservation of Indian Mounds. • The tour of the Red Wing Shoe Company and how they have taken some items from older buildings and made unique things out of them, like conference tables and artwork. • The Waseca High School program to have students write about and make videos on the history of Waseca. • The tour of the downtown area. • A band stand from 1932 that was made into a unique bandshell where bands play once a week. This is part of their parks system. • A tour of a buffalo farm. Mr. Christian recommended reading through the Herman feasibility study which is on the City website. Mr. Brutlag asked if business owners are made aware of the color pallet and restrictions set by the HPC. It was stated that when applications are submitted, that information is provided. Ms. Zahn is in the process of updating the color pallet to include “Bavarian Blue”. 6. ADJOURN There being no further business to come before the Commission, the meeting was adjourned at 5:05 P.M.
