Welcoming Week Event - Friday, September 19, 2025 at 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at City Hall Parking Lot. Set up to begin at 4:30 p.m. 5. EVENTS COMMITTEE (PARTICIPATING EVENTS) 5.1. Bavarian Blast 5k Fun Run coordinated by Wellness Collective - Saturday, July 19, 2025. Sponsorship/donation for advertising has been paid. 5.2. Bavarian Blast Parade - Sunday, July 20, 2025. Registration fee has been paid. Volunteers needed. 5.3. New Ulm Night Out - Thursday, July 31, 2025 at 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. at German Park (rain location is Civic Center). Registration form has been submitted. Volunteers needed. 5.4. Brown County Fair - Wednesday, August 6 - Sunday, August 10, 2025. Registration fee has been paid. Volunteers needed. 5.5. South Central Minnesota Pridefest Parade and Festival - Saturday, September 8-9 6, 2025. Parade 11:15 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. free participation. Festival vendor 12:00 - 4:00 p.m. Registration fee $45 until July 14th. Discuss interest in participating in parade and/or exhibitor booth. ADJOURNMENT Page 2 of 9  MINUTES New Ulm Human Rights Commission Wednesday, May 28, 2025 at 5:15 p.m. City Hall Council Chambers Members Present: Deb Egeland, Sarah Leslie, Kristin Sprenger, Obehi Okojie, David Nissen, Cassandra Ness, Allie Lee, Mayor Backer, Henry Albrecht, Kaden Schaefer. Call to Order: Meeting called to order by Kristin Sprenger. Approval of Minutes: Motion to approve April 28, 2025 Minutes by Obehi Okojie, seconded by Sarah Leslie, passed by all members present. Budget Report: 2025 Budget Request was $8,500. Proposed increasing the total request by $500 due to expenses relating to the Welcome Week Event for a total of $9,000. Motion to submit 2025 Budget Request in the amount of $9,000 made by Allie Lee, seconded by Obehi Okojie, passed by all members present. Events Committees: Immigration Forum - Immigration forum tentatively scheduled for June 24 at the Public Library with NUCAT to record. Welcoming Week - Welcoming Week event is scheduled for Friday, September 19th in the City Hall parking lot. Plans include four food trucks with different menu items, porta potties, hand wash station, and bounce house. Will send communication to local organizations and Park & Recreation Department, and a flyer to other New Ulm boards and commissions through Lisa at City Hall. Bavarian Blast 5k Fun Run – Submitted donation to Wellness Collective for sponsorship so the Human Rights Commission logo will appear on the t-shirts and give-away bags. Also have the option to put items in bag, such as lip balm. Bavarian Blast Parade – Registration form and payment has been submitted. New Ulm Night Out – The Commission will participate. Brown County Fair – Registration form and payment has been submitted. Members to volunteer at the booth. South Central Minnesota Pridefest Parade and Festival – waiting to receive information. Education Committee: Community Surveys - No update. Living Without Limits – Education Subcommittee met on May 13, 2025. Objectives (1) to shed light on everyday mobility, sensory and communication challenges of neighbors as they navigate community; (2) to increase respect and inclusion for individuals with differing abilities in Page 3 of 9 community; and (3) to empower community members to design community with inclusion in mind. Format to include speakers, demonstrations, panels, questions and answers, at the Public Library to be filmed by NUCAT. Proposed topics include autism, developmental delays, low vision, reduced mobility, and low literacy/English as a second language. Obehi Okojie mentioned that One NU did a similar project by partnering with Human Library Organization. Obehi will look into the possibility of Human Rights Commission also partnering with Human Library Organization. Next step is for commissioners to provide Lisa at City Hall with ideas for speakers and topics to provide to the subcommittee. The plan is to hold quarterly events at the Public Library and have NUCAT film. Other Business: COPAL - David Mesta, guest speaker from Comunidades Organizando el Poder y la Acción Latina (COPAL), handed out a pamphlet and provided an overview of the organization (sharing resources, information regarding immigration concerns, etc.). Informational forum tentatively set for June 24th at the Public Library, NUCAT to film. Brown County Transit - Pat LaCourse, Brown County Transit Manager, was not present to discuss options for Heartland Express and Hermann Express pamphlets being available in braille or printed in another language. Promotional Items - Decided to order 500 lip balms and 500 magnets. Motion made by Deb Egeland, seconded by Obehi Okojie, passed by all members present. Discussed ordering another pack of human rights stickers as well. Motion made by Cassandra Ness, seconded by Obehi Okojie, passed by all members present. Legislative Update: Mayor attended a town hall meeting with Senator Gary Dahms which involved discussion of funding for long term care and immigrant insurance. She plans to report back after a special session. City Council Liaison: Obehi Okojie did not have an update. Date of Next Meeting: Monday, June 23, 2025.
