The notice and agenda of the meeting were posted at the Norman Animal Welfare Center on 3428 South Jenkins on the 15th of November, 2019. The meeting was also posted on the City of Norman website at www.normanok.gov. I. Call to Order Co‐Chairperson Mark Howery called the meeting to order at 6:00PM. II. Roll Call MEMBERS PRESENT: Co‐Chairperson Mark Howery Councilman Bill Scanlon Kim Fairbanks Sandy Moore‐Furneaux Kristy Wicker MEMBERS ABSENT: Co‐Chairperson Rebecca Bean David Biles, D.V.M. III. Discussion and Approval of the October Minutes A motion to approve the minutes was made by Sandy Moore‐Furneaux. Kim Fairbanks seconded. The motion passed. IV. Monthly Statistics Mark Bechtel presented the monthly statistics. He mentioned that the owner surrender list was at 114 animals and that staff continue to work on bringing those animals into the shelter. There was a 24% increase in adoptions from last October and there were 42 animals transferred out to rescue in October. Regarding staffing there are two animal welfare techs who are in the process of being hired. One is already a city employee and just needs to transfer divisions; the other person is in the background check phase. Mark Bechtel spoke about the animal welfare donation accounts. There is a $6,117 account, a $22,220 account and a $126,138 account balance for a total of $154,476. There has been a bid submitted for the HVAC repair. Initially there was a plan to fix a couple units every fiscal year going forward, but after inspecting the system, it became clear there is an urgent need to replace all the units considering their bad shape. Hopefully this can be accomplished before summer hits as the AC units are unrepairable. There was a three‐day adoption event the 24th‐26th of October and 85 animals were adopted out. Six animals were returned during that period of time. The Dogs Playing for Life Seminar is set for December 5th and 6th. The shelter will be closed both days so that staff can attend training. This program will show staff how to form play groups with dogs. This is a free event for the shelter because of a grant submitted by Ashley Battiest. V. Previous Business Mark Bechtel has reached out to PetSmart to be more involved going forward with adoption events and sending shelter cats to PetSmart to be adopted. Trey Amrein talked about the disaster plan that is in place for our shelter. Trey spoke about the places in the city that are in agreement to place animals depending on the areas that are affected by the disaster and the lessons learned from the Moore tornado. There was a discussion about outside help and coordinating MOU’s in advance. VI.
