Meeting Minutes
September 23, 2009
Members Present: Robert Spayne, Chairman
Mark Bettencourt
John Iovino
Ray Stewart
Members Excused: William Nash
Also Present: Luis DePina, Recreation Director
Meeting called to order at 6:05 p.m.
A motion was made by John Iovino with a second from Ray Stewart to approve the minutes of the July
meeting. Motion passes unanimously.
Lou DePina distributed an updated list of summer programs and participant enrollment. DePina stated that
a men’s basketball league was also started this summer and that it went well.
The summer camp registrations also went well. There were a total of 1440 available slots and 1426 of
them were filled. A number of people were turned away due to lack of available slots. The program will
be restructured for next year and will also see an increase in pricing. The increase in price and number of
participants should result in the program making money. Additional programs were offered but did not run
due to lack of enrollment. DePina also stated that the Fall and Winter brochures have been distributed.
DePina gave an update on the YMCA property. The City is waiting on the disposition of the North
Stonington property in order to determine the final price for lease of the building. DePina will make a
proposal to the City Council. The Recreation Department will also look to volunteers to do some of the
work (cleanup, painting, etc)
Meeting adjourned at 7:00 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Mark Bettencourt
