Beach Nourishment Committee Meeting

Minutes Beach Nourishment Committee Meeting April 18, 2023 Meeting called to order by Sandy Boyer 6:35 P.M. at OD Fire House Attendees: Sandy Boyer, Bruce Boyer, John Lawicki, Peter Mavrelis, Paul Panther, C.J. Jackson, Michele Bonneau, Al Hallane, Scott Kingan, David Schneider . The minutes of the March meeting were approved. Reports Sandy: 1. Central and West end project The Army Corps of Engineers, Indiana Dept of Natural Resources, and our engineer have determined that the ordinary highwater mark for lake Michigan has dropped 2.5 feet from the previous determination. This will work in our favor for the central and west end project to minimize the mitigation requirement (.0768 acres will need mitigation). Much discussion followed on how to satisfy this requirement. 2. East end project Some discussion followed regarding the mitigation on the east end project. A final date for mediation is set for June 13 and we are hopeful for a favorable outcome for the town. We are hopeful that the requirement for mitigation will be dropped and as part of the settlement sand will be deposited on the beach. Plaintiffs will be notified when the court decisions are final. Peter Long Range planning 1. the placement of lifesaving equipment at each accessway was discussed and this will be added to our beach mission statement. Allen Resilient Coastal Projects Initiative 1. Allen will attend a meeting this week and report at next meeting. Scott /SandyDNR lake Michigan coastal program 1. Long term planning Monies hopefully will be allocated by the state of Indiana for a study of the shoreline erosion. This study will allow for a longterm solution for sand nourishment for Portage and Ogden Dunes beaches. Bruce Dave Snow fencing 1. They will report back at next meeting Scott Reconciliation 1. Monies will be exchanged in the next few weeks regarding the east end project. New Business Paul John Metal stairs 1. This possibility of putting in either temporary or permanent stairs from the accessways to the beach was discussed. Meeting adjourned at 7:54 PM Next meeting May 16, 6:30 P.M. FIrehouse
