Special Meeting - Fall Retreat
1. CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 4:25 p.m.

Timothy Grisham, Commissioner Ron Hinton, Commissioner Kathy
Murray, Commissioner Katie Nelson and Commissioner Katherine

The minutes were approved.

17-1126 Olympia Arts Commission Fall Retreat
4-5pm - Community Vitality Index presentation with Kyle Wiese of the
Economic Development Council: Mr. Wiese shared the Community Vitality Index
(CVI) tool with the Commission. Members encouraged use of the information as much as
possible to share the benefits of the arts on our economy.
5-5:30pm - Social Time/Dinner

5:30-6:30pm - Arts Walk Recap with Arts Program Specialist Angel Nava: Ms.
Nava's analysis of the fall event opened discussion on ways to improve the event.
Commissioner Grisham suggested gathering maps the Monday following Arts Walk to
help with event count. Commissioner Goddu referenced the works of Edward Tufte in
regards to redesigning the Arts Walk map, space suggestions were made to help
support emerging artists, and greater school participation was encouraged.
6:30-7pm - Arts Commission 2018 leadership and committee structure:
Commissioners discussed leadership and agreed the intent is to cycle Commissioners
through two years of leadership, beginning with Vice-Chair.
Commissioners also determined to replace the current committee structures of
Community Events and Outreach and Art in Public Places with project-based
committees, still meeting in advance of the Commission meetings.
Grants: Commissioners Goddu, Grisham and Hicks
Crossings: Commissioners Goddu and Grisham
Percival Kick-off Event: Commissioners Murray and Williams
7-8pm - 2018 Work Plan brainstorm: Commissioners reviewed the 2017 Work Plan
and Municipal Art Plan budget, making changes for review in December.
The Commission moved to retain Commissioner Hicks for a second term as
Chair, with Commissioner Grisham serving as Vice-Chair in 2018 and Chair in
2019. The motion carried by the following vote:
Aye: 5 - Vice Chair Goddu, Commissioner Hinton, Commissioner Murray,
Commissioner Nelson and Commissioner Williams
Absent: 1 - Commissioner Fairbanks
Abstained: 2 - Chair Hicks and Commissioner Grisham
17-0929 ARCH Program Progress Report
Ms. Johnson shared a presentation and informational materials that have been provided
to participants in the ArCH process. Commissioner Goddu filled in content from her
experience on the Resource Committee. Commissioners engaged in meaningful
dialogue regarding equity in and access to the arts in OIympia.
The report was received.
