CALL TO ORDER Chair Hicks called the meeting to order at 4:04 p.m. 1.A ROLL CALL Present: 8 - Chair Stacy Hicks, Vice Chair Timothy Grisham, Commissioner Frederick Dobler, Commissioner Diana Fairbanks, Commissioner Marygrace Goddu, Commissioner Kathy Murray, Commissioner Katie Nelson and Commissioner Katherine Williams Absent: 1 - Commissioner Autumn Yoke OTHERS PRESENT Arts Program Specialist Angel Nava Olympia Artspace Alliance Board Chair Kris Tucker 2. APPROVAL OF AGENDA The agenda was approved. 3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES 18-0425 Approval of April 12. 2018 Arts Commission Minutes Vice Chair Grisham abstained because he was not present at the April 12 meeting and could not vouch for the accuracy of the minutes. The minutes were approved by the following vote: Aye: 7 - Chair Hicks, Commissioner Dobler, Commissioner Fairbanks, Commissioner Goddu, Commissioner Murray, Commissioner Nelson and Commissioner Williams Absent: 1 - Commissioner Yoke Abstained: 1 - Vice Chair Grisham City of Olympia Page 1 Arts Commission Meeting Minutes May 10, 2018 4. PUBLIC COMMENT - None 5. ANNOUNCEMENTS Commissioners shared information about past and upcoming art events. Ms. Johnson announced the ArCH presentation to Council has been moved to July 17. 6. BUSINESS ITEMS 18-0426 Arts Commission May Retreat 4:00 p.m. - Welcome new Commissioners, Chair Hicks 4:20 p.m. - Recap of Arts Walk - Ms. Nava shared data collected from the spring 2018 Arts Walk survey, open to participating artists and venues, as well as audience members. 4:45 p.m. - Update from Olympia Artspace Alliance - Ms. Tucker began her presentation with reference to two new public art projects in Olympia: the Christian Moeller project at the WSECU parking garage and the South Capitol Neighborhood banners, before moving on to current and past work of the Olympia Artspace Alliance. 5:30 p.m. - Dinner - Meet & Greet 6:00 p.m. - New Faces: String & Shadow Puppet Theater, Olympia Film Collective, Story Oly - Commissioners appreciated learning about the mission of each arts organization and meeting their representatives. 7:00 p.m. - Work Plan recap - Chair Hicks led Commissioners through the 2018 Work Plan to familiarize members with upcoming projects. Commissioner Goddu recommended that the fall retreat be focused on ArCH, especially with regards to development of the 2019 Work Plan, and the mission of the Arts Commission. In addition, Commissioners recommended some kind of send-off for Olympia's first Poet Laureate at the same retreat. 7:30 p.m. - Q & A for new Commissioners - Commissioners shared tips on how to get up to speed more quickly as a Commissioner.
