City Hall Meeting Minutes 601 4th Avenue E Olympia, WA 98501 Arts Commission Contact: Stephanie Johnson 360.709.2678 Thursday, October 11, 2018 4:00 PM The Olympia Center, Room MPA - 222 Columbia St NW 1. CALL TO ORDER Chair Hicks called the meeting to order at 4:05 p.m. 1.A ROLL CALL Present: 8 - Chair Stacy Hicks, Vice Chair Timothy Grisham, Commissioner Frederick Dobler, Commissioner Diana Fairbanks, Commissioner Marygrace Goddu, Commissioner Kathy Murray, Commissioner Katherine Williams and Commissioner Autumn Yoke 2. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Vice Chair Grisham moved, seconded by Commissioner Dobler, to move Item 6 into the schedule laid out in Item 7. The agenda was unanimously approved as amended. 3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES 18-0930 Approval of September 13, 2018 Arts Commission Minutes The minutes were approved. 4. PUBLIC COMMENT - None 5. ANNOUNCEMENTS Commissioners announced information about past and upcoming arts events. 6. BUSINESS ITEMS 18-0931 Approval of Poet Laureate 2019-2020 Ms. Johnson shared the recommendation of the jury: Sady Sparks for Poet Laureate, Thresea Yoke for alternate. Ms. Johnson shared applications and work samples from each of the poets. Commissioners Goddu and Murray, and the current Poet Laureate each spoke to their support of the recommendation, and how the jury came to their City of Olympia Page 1 Arts Commission Meeting Minutes October 11, 2018 recommendation. Vice Chair Grisham moved, seconded by Commissioner Fairbanks, to forward the recommendation to City Council for consideration. The motion carried by the following vote: Aye: 7 - Chair Hicks, Vice Chair Grisham, Commissioner Dobler, Commissioner Fairbanks, Commissioner Goddu, Commissioner Murray and Commissioner Williams Nay: 1 - Commissioner Yoke 7. REPORTS 18-0932 Arts Commission Fall Retreat 2018 4-5 p.m. - ArCH update - Assistant City Manager Jay Burney shared progress to date on the ArCH project and indicated items from the report Commissioners might take on in their 2019 work plan to support ArCH efforts. 5-5:45 p.m. - Downtown pedestrian improvement design update - As the presentation was cancelled at a late date, Commissioners worked instead to update the Action Plan item of the annual count that is taken of the number of known arts venues and events in downtown. 5:45-6:15 p.m. - Dinner and Vice-Chair discussion - Commissioner Goddu moved to nominate Vice-chair Grisham and Commissioner Dobler as chair and Vice-chair for 2019, respectively. The vote will be taken at the November meeting. 6:15-6:45 p.m. - Poet Laureate first term debrief and second term recommendation - Amy Solomon-Minarchi shared highlights from her inaugural turn as Poet Laureate. Commissioners shared appreciation of her work to elevate poetry in the community. 6:45-8 p.m. - 2019 Work Plan and Municipal Art Plan review and discussion - Commissioners reviewed the current plans and discussed options for new items.
