19-0906 Fall Arts Commission Retreat
Poet Laureate Sady Sparks - Poetry Activity Each Commissioner participated in
putting together a black-out poem, created by removing words from already existing
prose, which they then read aloud. Ms. Sparks noted the exercise is a part of the
community workshops she's been conducting as Poet Laureate, and it's a good way to
engage new writers.
Arts Walk Strategic Plan Update and discussion Ms. Nava provided an Arts Walk
update and Commissioners engaged in freeform discussion about the event.
Creative District handout Ms. Johnson shared Creative District handouts.
GACO Discussion: Animal Fire Theater, Hummingbird Studio, Olympia
Artspace Alliance Hummingbird Studio was not represented due to illness, but the
other two organizations shared their experience with the GACO process, their take on the
funding climate in Olympia, and information about their organizations.
2020 Chair/Vice-Chair Appointments and Work Plan Kick-Off Ms. Johnson noted
that according to Rules of Procedure, the Commission shall elect new leadership each
Novermber or December. She reported Chair Grisham is interested in seeking a second
term as Chair. Commissioners will return in November to self-nominate, with an election
in November or December. Commissioners went through the 2019/20 Work Plan and
Municipal Art Plan with an eye for additions and changes they would like to make for
2020/21. Commissioner Hicks asked Ms. Johnson to bring an updated version of the
Municipal Art Plan budget with expenditures to the next meeting.
