1. CALL TO ORDER
Vice-Chair Dobler called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m.

Commissioner Stacy Hicks, Commissioner Kathy Murray and

Absent: 1 - Chair Timothy Grisham

The agenda was approved.

20-0771 Approval of September 10, 2020 Arts Commission Meeting Minutes
The minutes were approved.

5. ANNOUNCEMENTS
Director Simmons thanked Commissioners for their work and commitment to the arts,
especially given the added challenge of the pandemic.
Ms. Johnson announced there were still spots open for the Americans for the Arts training
"Artists at the Development Table" on October 24.
6. BUSINESS ITEMS
20-0769 Creative District Land Use Planning
Heritage Commission Staff Liaison Marygrace Goddu explained she was part of a team

of City staff looking at barriers in code and regulations that might be hindering housing as
well as other types of development. She indicated the Creative District currently has two
zones within its boundaries: waterfront and downtown business. Explaining how important
the language is in code, she shared different approaches used to define "creative
industry," as part of her own process of providing language for Olympia's code.
Commissioners provided feedback.

20-0768 Arts Commission Chair and Vice-Chair for 2021
Vice-Chair Dobler noted that following two terms, Chair Grisham intended to step down
from the position. Ms. Johnson said it has been the practice of the Arts Commission to
have Vice-Chairs move in to the Chair role, having acquired experience in the support
position. Vice-Chair Dobler indicated his interest in moving to the Chair position.
Commissioners Burlingame and Murray expressed interest in the Vice-Chair opportunity.
Commissioner Murray was provided the first option to be considered for the position. The
slate of officers will be presented at the November meeting.
The discussion was completed.
20-0770 Wander Olympia’s Waterfront story map
Commissioners viewed the draft Wander Olympia's Waterfront story map sharing parks,
public art and other amenities along the "Big W." Commissioners were complimentary of
the work done and shared ideas of elements to include in the overlay maps.
The discussion was completed.
7. REPORTS
20-0772 Policy and Program Recommendations to City Council
Commissioner Murray reported that a first attempt of an Artist in Residence program
application has been drafted and reviewed. The group will continue to fine-tune the
document at their November meeting.
The report was received.
20-0773 Arts Program Support
Ms. Johnson shared that Arts Month had launched, the new Traffic Box Wraps were
installed, the Grants to Arts Organizations workshop on October 7 was well-attended, and
reminded Commissioners of the Here We Are Magic poetry workshop on October 17.
The report was received.
