ROLL CALL 3. ANNOUNCEMENTS 4. BUSINESS ITEMS 4.A Case: Design Review Board Awards of Merit, 2017 Staff member McCoy asked DRB members to hold the date of December 19th, when the City Council will recognize and present the two Awards of Merit to the developer/team of the Campus Lofts and Thurston First Bank Building projects. Ms. McCoy asked members to plan on attending the meeting, if possible. Chair LaValle will provide a brief summary of the ”how and why” of the awards and projects, and the City Council will recognize not only the project recipients but Board members as well. Board Member LaValle contacted the applicant, and staff has learned that Mr. John is honored, pleased, and plans to be there with his design team. 4.B Case: Planning for Future Study Sessions and/or the Next DRB Retreat Staff member McCoy provided the Board with a few options for the date of the next Annual DRB Retreat, including January 20 or 27, both Saturdays, or January 21, Sunday. Ms. McCoy asked Board members to let her know their number 1 and number 2 choices. Board member McGrath has secured the AWC’s big meeting room for the upcoming DRB Retreat. Suggestions (so far) for agenda items for the retreat include: • Viewing a DRB webinar • Having a post-presentation EIFS discussion • Electronic submittal packets for review • Focused study of windows/doors, walking tour Board Member Jami Heinricher suggested that the next study session might be a focused study of windows/doors downtown, a walk-about – “Creating Streetside Building Walls”. Staff member McCoy asked Ms. Heinricher to City of Olympia Page 1 Design Review Board Meeting Minutes October 26, 2017 provide a narrative of what the study session might include, then the two could work to put the walking tour together, for the next retreat or for an upcoming non-project review meeting. 4.C Case: Design Review of Leased Spaces As a “lessons-learned” discussion, Board Member Tom Carver led a discussion related to projects that once constructed, for reasons not fully known, did not resemble what was approved by the Board. One such example includes the newer Dick’s Sporting Goods project at the Capital Mall. Tom pointed to the required entry from Dick’s to the west – it looks like a blank wall; the color of the building looks like a pale yellow that contributes to the blank-wall effect; windows that engage the public from the sidewalk are lacking; and pictures in display windows were not put in. 4.D Case: Webinar: Design Review: Purpose, Principles and Practice Due to time constraints, this item was postponed to a later date, possibly as an item for the upcoming 2018 DRB Retreat. 5. OTHER TOPICS 6. ADJOURNMENT Accommodations City of Olympia Page 2
