Board Meeting Minutes Monday, February 26, 2018 at 5:00 PM Present: Sonya Nicely, Emma Brockway, John Phillips, Wilson Rankin, Annyce Levy and Elizabeth Sensabaugh Absent: Nishant Grover and Betty Overdorf I. Old Business: Sonya Nicely was appointed Vice Chair. II. Library Staffing A. One part- time position has not been filled. Current staff are covering the available hours. B. Youth Librarians Catherine and Dave Banker have worked to increase youth programming; Teens: Mindful Monday involves crafting and mindfulness. Volunteen Tuesdays involves teens contributing their time to support local partnerships. Gaming Wednesdays involves life-sized board games. Musical Thursdays involves giving out instruments such as ukuleles, guitars, xylophone, etc. On Teen After Hours Friday, Beth Spillman is a regular performer for teens. Juveniles: Family Nights happen every Tuesday. Maker Mayhem happens every 2nd Tuesday. A new Pajama Storytime and Family Dinner Book Club has been initiated and is well attended. PreK: Catherine began a rotating weekly storytime schedule of ‘stay and play’ on the 1st Thursdays of the month. She has offered a Mom Tea or STEM activities on the 2nd Thursdays. Sensory or ‘Messy Play’ happens on 3rd Thursdays, and Creative Process Art begins on 4th Thursdays! Homeschool: Book Club for homeschool students happens every 4th Monday and Writers Club happens every 1st Monday. Outreach: Cookies and Cops was offered in October 2017 and a Police Storytime was offered the same month. Other outreach events that Catherine offered include attending the Belle Heth Elementary Maker Fair in November and a McHarg Elementary Literacy Night. She also presented to AARP at the Recreation Center regarding library resources with IT Coordinator Duncan Hall. Catherine also delivered a Lewis Gale New Mom Storytime in January of this year! III. FY 2018 Budget The Lamplighters awarded $9,390 for 2018 programs! Sonya commented favorably that Lamplighter contributions are highlighted and recognized by the Library regularly in marketing and promotion materials. IV. Programming The Board reviewed the March calendar of events. Board member Annyce Levy suggested that programming materials be taken to the Clothing Bank to highlight reading programs. Board member John Phillips suggested that library events could be added to the City’s electricity bill. Director Sensabaugh updated the Board about planning preparations with several departments of Radford University to bring author and illustrator Cece Bell to both Radford University and the Radford Public Library. Meetings with the School of Teacher Education and Leadership, the Teaching Resources Center, the College of Education and Human Development, and McConnell Library began in August of 2017 to make the arrangements and bring the event to fruition. VI. Other/Miscellaneous The Board briefly discussed the process of banning a patron and also discussed the Code of Conduct and No Solicitation policies.
