Minutes of Keep Richwood Beautiful Commission Regular Meeting of Thursday, July 11, 2019 BE IT KNOWN THAT, a Regular Meeting of the Keep Richwood Beautiful Commission of City of Richwood was held Thursday, July 11, 2019, beginning at 3:15 PM in the Richwood City Hall, 1800 N. Brazosport Blvd. Richwood, Texas. CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 3:15 p.m. INVOCATION The invocation was led by Ms. Ellis. ROLL CALL OF MEMBERS Janet Jackson-Ellis - Chair Brittany Figaro - Vice Chair Garry Ellis Audrey Johnson - ABSENT Kimberly Mayer Others present: Denise Green, KRB Director; Giani Cantu, City Secretary; Anna Marie, resident PUBLIC COMMENTS There were no public comments. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING June 4, 2019 On motion by Kim Mayer second by Brittany Figaro with all present members voting “aye” the minutes of June 4, 2019 were approved. REPORTS ON RECENT EVENTS KTB Conference - June 17-19 Kim Mayer reported that she appeared before Council to report on attendance in the conference. Some of the training classes attended by members included: From the Ground Up: Starting A Successful Community Garden; Introduction to the Master Composter Program and An Overview of Recycling in Texas; Recycling Education and Outreach: Best Practices for Engaging Recyclers; Community Gardens Can Help with Food Insecurity; Programs and Environmental Regulations From the Council of Governments; TCEQ Programs and Resources for Communities; Rewarding and Recognizing Residents: The Good Neighbor Awards; Litter-Free Fort Worth and Trash Free Texas; Adopt-a- Highway: Bringing The Program to Your Community; Connecting the Drops: How Your Organization Can Do More For Texas Water; Evaluating Your City’s Sense of Place; The Placemaking Toolbox; Servant Leadership: What Is It, and How Can You Apply It?; Away From the Curb: Special Event and Apartment Recycling Options; School Carton Recycling Success Stories: Help From the Field; Meeting the Needs of Your Changing Community; Small and Rural Affiliates Roundtable; Governor’s Community Achievement Awards Roundtable; Marketing in a One-Size Fits One World: Using Research to Engage Audiences; and Marketing Show and Tell: A Marketing Primer. Major takeaways include partnering and networking are crucial; community support and engagement is vital; educating the community on recycling is important, and there are many sources available to small communities. A few goals the group hopes to accomplish for FY 2019-2020 include Community Garden; Grant Research and Application for Beautification and Park Improvements; Education to the public with free publications; and Application of various awards available. Committee Workday - June 27 Brittany, Audrey and Kim planted 12 flowers and 1 tree at the Community Building. Committee Workday - July 1 Gary Ellis put up approximately 60 flags. DISCUSSION AND ACTION ITEMS Review of FY 2018-2019 Budget Ms. Cantu presented financials. Discussion on Five Year Strategic Plan 2019-2022 Kim Mayer presented the five-year strategic plan draft. Staff recommended a workshop to dive into more details and continue building strategic plan. Discussion and possible action on upcoming events All American Night - July 13 Brittany will get the table setup and supplies. Kim purchased all the supplies, food and drinks, which came in well under budget. Asked for green recycle bin to be placed at the park. Audrey and Kim food prep and serving. Denise stated volunteers are needed to man bounce houses for about an hour. Kim stated the PD would like to borrow flags for the park. Committee agreed. Committee set a 4:30 p.m. arrival time. Community Litter Index - July 15 or 16 Denise stated the index is due before August 1. The index may take place any day prior to 12:30 p. The litter index is looking for illegal signs, graffiti, litter, abandoned cars and then each area of town is scored. The litter index will be done on the 16th at 4:00 p.m. Movie Night Denise stated movie nights would include movie and could sell pizza, popcorn and drink. Brittany says she has heard that movies are usually cartoon and would like to see more regular movies and have scheduled. Denise suggested bringing back for discussion at August meeting. 2019 Fall Clean-up and City Wide Garage Sale - November 14-16 Cleanup will be Saturday only. City Wide Garage Sale all weekend. National Night Out - October 1 Brittany stated that we may need to reschedule meeting date for this month. Trunk or Treat - October 25 Event to be held in the street. Christmas in the Park - December 14 No discussion was held on this item. Future Event Recommendations No events were recommended. Discussion and action on setting a date for dedicating bench at Bobby Ford Park to Ophelia Ms. Jackson reported Ophelia should be spelt Ophilia. Option 1 was requested for the plaque. She would like ribbon cutting and her husband Rocky to cut the ribbon. Ms. Ellis asked how to advertise. Denise stated she would suggest writing own story and sending to Facts after. The committee could also advertise on Facebook. Saturday July 27 at 7:00 p.m. was tentatively set. Ms. Ellis will confirm with Rocky. Discussion on proposed community garden Kim reported that the subcommittee will be on July 23 at 10 a.m. Garry asked where they are proposing to place the garden. Kim stated they still need to discuss but has looked at available locations. Garry asked how big are thinking. Kim stated they still need discussion but would like to see at least 10 raised beds. Discussion and possible action on participation in Keep Polk Beautiful event The event will be held August 10 from 8a-12pm. Kim suggested committee could volunteer and/or set up a table to the table. Janet Jackson-Ellis will reach out to school contact to see if they would allow KRB to set up a table and help for the event.
