Public Safety Committee

Regular Meeting of the Public Safety Committee Held in the Conference Room at City Hall August 24, 2015 Notice of this meeting was given to the public in compliance with Sections 10-15-1 through 10- 15-4 NMSA 1978 and Resolution 14-36. ROLL CALL The meeting convened at 3:00 p.m. with Chair Denny presiding and Councilors Sanchez and Velasquez present with Councilor Sandoval being absent. Staff present: Bill Bartlett, Karen Sanders, Mike Mathews, Devin Graham, Brad McFadin and Phil Smith. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Councilor Sanchez moved to approve the August 24, 2015 regular Public Safety Committee Meeting Agenda as presented. Councilor Velasquez was the second. A voice vote was unanimous and the motion passed with Councilor Sandoval being absent. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Councilor Sanchez moved to approve the July 27, 2015 Public Safety Committee meeting minutes. Councilor Velasquez was the second. A voice vote was unanimous and the motion passed with Councilor Sandoval being absent. REGULAR ITEMS None NON-ACTION ITEMS Police Department Report Chief Smith gave an update on the Police Department. A total of five deaths were reported for the month of July. Municipal Court has been of great assistance to the Police Department by aggressively collecting fines and fees aiding in the determent of crimes. The Police Department has expanded Police Service Aid (PSA) positions. There are currently seven PSA positions open and are being recruited at the age of 18. Fire Department Report Chief Graham gave an update on the Fire Department. Reports year to date 2015 include cardiac arrest saves – 6, structure fires – 60, vehicle fires – 20, grass fires – 51 and false alarms – 241. There are currently 12 openings. Out of 51 applicants, 4 candidates successfully completed the process. Code Enforcement Report Bill Bartlett stated six structures have been abated. In the next two weeks, five more structures will be removed that have been in an extreme state of disrepair and become a nuisance to the surrounding area. Municipal Court has also been of great assistance to the department. When individuals sign up for community service, Code Enforcement utilizes them to get projects done within the City. Currently, they are working on getting the base cleaned up. Emergency Management Report Karen Sanders stated the emergency operations plan is completed. The City received a letter of approval from the State. All requirements are current, therefore the City can apply for grant funding. A new Red Cross Disaster Specialist has been hired.
