Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes Regular Meeting Minutes March 7, 2018 6:30 PM The Parks and Recreation Commission of the Town of Sahuarita met in the Sahuarita Council Chambers, 375 West Sahuarita Center Way, Sahuarita, AZ 85629 on Wednesday, March 7, 2018. I. CALL TO THE PUBLIC III. APPROVAL OF MEETING MINUTES 1. Approval of the February 7, 2018 Commission Meeting Minutes RESULT: APPROVED [UNANIMOUS] MOVER: Shel Zatkin, Commissioner SECONDER: Erin Thomas, Vice Chairperson AYES: Diane Huckins, Erin Thomas, Charles Borozinski, Shel Zatkin ABSENT: Michele Ahern, Sergio Arellano, Vince Luna IV. BUSINESS 1. Present John "Mark" Ferguson with the 2017 quarterly Employee Award Chairperson Huckins presented John "Mark" Ferguson, Maintenance Worker with a certificate of appreciation and a gift card for exceeding his regularly assigned role and responsibility. RESULT: DISCUSSION ONLY 2. Student Wellness Advocacy Team (SWAT) Activities and Events Update Members of the Anza Trail Student Wellness Advocacy Team (SWAT) attended and representatives Iliana Islas, Mikayla Sornacki and Nathan Lyon provided an update on SWAT and their latest goal to prevent smoking in Town Parks. Zatkin inquired about Regular Meeting Minutes- March 7, 2018 Page 1 of 3 Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes their smoking survey, and encouraged SWAT to include questions regarding age, residency and other demographics. SWAT plans to circulate their survey during Fiesta. Borozinski, Huckins and Thomas thanked the students for their dedication. RESULT: DISCUSSION ONLY 3. Discussion on commissioner presentations and visions for: North Santa Cruz Park Expansion, Pickleball Courts, Inclusive Accessible Playground Commissioners Borozinski, and Thomas provided a summary on proposals for pickleball courts and an inclusive park, respectively. Discussion ensued. Smejkal recommended the commission continue dialogue on their ideas and assist staff in understanding the scope of their vision, and the potential for variance in project costs, based on recommendations for project location, scope and size. RESULT: DISCUSSION ONLY 4. Discussion of a Ten Year Capital Improvement Project (CIP) Plan Smejkal explained the draft five year Capital Improvement Project (CIP) plan and cost estimates based on past CIP budget approvals, and projections. The draft plan will be discussed again at the next meeting. RESULT: DISCUSSION ONLY V. COMMISSIONER AND DIRECTOR REPORTS ON CURRENT EVENTS 1. Director/Commissioner Report Smejkal provided the commission with an update on recent events and activities. On February 26, 2018, Mayor and Council approved the addition of lights for the Football Field at the K-8 school in the amount of $141,950. Maintenance worker Mario Troutwine tested for the Certified Playground Safety Inspector certification. Parks staff is preparing the baseball fields for Little League Opening Ceremonies, which take place on March 24. Laura Holbrook was selected as the Parks and Facilities Manager and will start on April 9. Spring Break camp, new this year, is March 12 - 16. The Town assisted Green Valley Recreation Foundation with the Senior Games 4 and 12 mile Bike Race on March 3. The race started at Quail Creek - Veterans Municipal Park. Smejkal summarized the draft Fiesta Flyer, the vendor and activities site plan and parking map, copies provided, and shirts and parking passes were distributed. RESULT: DISCUSSION ONLY VI. Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting Agenda Pursuant to A.R.S. § 38-431.02 notice is hereby given to the public that the Sahuarita Parks & Recreation Commission will hold a meeting at the date and time specified below at the Sahuarita Town Hall Council Chambers, 375 West Sahuarita Center Way, Sahuarita, Arizona. Members of the Commission will attend either in person or by telephone conference call. To better serve our community, the Council Chambers is wheelchair accessible. Persons with a disability may request a reasonable accommodation, such as a sign language interpreter, by contacting the Town Clerk’s Office at 520-822-8801.
