Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes Regular Meeting Minutes April 4, 2018 6:30 PM The Parks and Recreation Commission of the Town of Sahuarita met in the Sahuarita Council Chambers, 375 West Sahuarita Center Way, Sahuarita, AZ 85629 on Wednesday, April 4, 2018. I. BUSINESS Regular Meeting Minutes- April 4, 2018 Page 1 of 3 Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes 1. Discussion on commissioner presentations and visions for: North Santa Cruz Park Expansion, Pickleball Courts, Inclusive Accessible Playground Luna summarized his vision for North Santa Cruz expansion. Luna would like to engage the land owner in dialogue on the vacant land. Luna estimates the cost for park expansion at $3.2 M, dependant on land acquisition. Luna requested that staff invite the land owner to a meeting to begin dialogue. Thomas has been gathering information on land possibilities for her vision of a an inclusive playground and park. Discussion ensued. Commissioners will continue to flesh out their projects; Huckins noted that determining a location for each idea is a necessary milestone. RESULT: DISCUSSION ONLY 2. Discussion of a Ten Year Capital Improvement Project (CIP) Plan Smejkal summarized the draft CIP plan. Fiscal 19 reflects a theme of repairs and safety. Smejkal anticipates having $50,000 for modulars/temporay building after the yard is completed. The scope of each CIP project will impact the cost, and estimates presume land is already owned. Smejkal recommended beginning CIP discussion for Fiscal Year 20, prior to the start of the budget cycle. RESULT: DISCUSSION ONLY 3. 2018 Arizona Parks and Recreation Association (APRA) Conference Commissioner Attendance Huckins and Thomas will attend the 2018 Arizona Parks and Recreation Association (APRA) conference. Director/Commissioner Report Smejkal summarized Fiesta Sahaurita, held on March 31, 2018, and deemed it a success. Preliminary numbers: approximately 6,000 attendees. Sponsorship, volunteers, shuttle ridership, and food bank donations increased over 2017. Upcoming events are Teen Night at Triple Play on Friday, April 6, Concert in the Park on Saturday, April 7, at 6 p.m. featuring Jazz music. The Volunteer Appreciation event is April 19, staff requested commissioners to RSVP including a plus one if they plan to bring a guest. The Recreation Division is recruiting lifeguards, finalizing the summer program guide, and preparing for the Pitch, Hit and Run activity on April 29. The new Parks and Facilities Manager Laura Holbrook starts on April 9. Maintenance is preparing for spring by completing weed eradication and pruning. Luna congratulated Melissa Hinkle, Events Coordinator and the rest of the staff on a job well done with Fiesta Sahuarita. Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting Agenda Pursuant to A.R.S. § 38-431.02 notice is hereby given to the public that the Sahuarita Parks & Recreation Commission will hold a meeting at the date and time specified below at the Sahuarita Town Hall Council Chambers, 375 West Sahuarita Center Way, Sahuarita, Arizona. Members of the Commission will attend either in person or by telephone conference call. To better serve our community, the Council Chambers is wheelchair accessible.
