The Parks and Recreation Commission of the Town of Sahuarita met in the Sahuarita Council Chambers,
375 West Sahuarita Center Way, Sahuarita, AZ 85629 on Wednesday, May 2, 2018.

1. Introduction of Laura Holbrook, Parks and Facilities Manager
Smejkal introduced Laura Holbrook, who joined the Parks and Recreation Department on
April 9, 2018 as the Parks and Facilities Manager. Holbrook provided the commission with a
summary of her education and professional experience.

2. Presentation on the Recreation Division: Initiatives, Programs and Changes
Adelina Martin, Programs Administrator gave a presentation on the Recreation Division,
highlighting current activities and programs and new initiatives.
Zatkin thanked Martin and suggested she take the presentation to Quail Creek and
invite the residents to attend and learn about the recreational opportunities the
Department offers.
Thomas asked if there were fees for the summer swim program; and Martin provided
the rates, as well as the time and date for the program.

3. Discussion on locations for future park amenities within existing parks
Smejkal provided a parks inventory with suggested standards, overages, and shortages, to
assist with the additional park amenities discussion. (Handout)
Smejkal presented aerials of the existing park boundaries and the evolution of park
conceptual and master plans.
Discussion ensued.
Smejkal requested feedback from the commission on park amenity locations in order to
amenitize the existing parks.

V. COMMISSIONERS AND DIRECTOR REPORTS ON CURRENT EVENTS
1. Director and Commissioner Report
Smejkal announced the new K-8 school was named Wrightson Ridge. Maintenance yard
construction is nearing completion. Maintenance staff is attending turf training May 3. Quail
Creek Dog Park is scheduled for turf improvement and will be closed May 14 through June
10; Anamax Dog Park will remain open for use.
There were 20 registered participants with nine in attendance at the Pitch, Hit and Run
event. Summer Open Rec starts June 4. Staff is converting the cargo van into a mobile
recreation unit to provide pop-up recreation programs and events.
The triathlon had 115 racers this year. The next Concert in the Park is Saturday, May 5, at
7:00 p.m. featuring Juke Box Junkies. The July 4 (Wednesday) celebration planning is
underway. The Sahuarita Teen Advisory Council (STAC) last event of the year is June 1. The
outgoing council will present a summary of activities at Town Council on May 14. Incoming

STAC is comprised of 18 students, a balanced group with both Sahuarita and Waldon Grove
students.

Pursuant to A.R.S. § 38-431.02 notice is hereby given to the public that the Sahuarita Parks & Recreation
Commission will hold a meeting at the date and time specified below at the Sahuarita Town Hall Council
Chambers, 375 West Sahuarita Center Way, Sahuarita, Arizona. Members of the Commission will attend
either in person or by telephone conference call.
To better serve our community, the Council Chambers is wheelchair accessible. Persons with a disability
may request a reasonable accommodation, such as a sign language interpreter, by contacting the Town
Clerk’s Office at 520-822-8801. Requests should be made no later than three working days prior to the
meeting to arrange the accommodation.
