The Parks and Recreation Commission of the Town of Sahuarita met in the Sahuarita Council Chambers,
375 West Sahuarita Center Way, Sahuarita, AZ 85629 on Wednesday, August 7, 2019.

IV. BUSINESS
1. Election of Parks and Recreation Commission Chairperson and Vice Chairperson
Motion was made by Thomas, seconded by Luna to elect Huckins as Commission
Chairperson.
Motion was made by Huckins, seconded by Ahern to elect Thomas as Commission Vice
Chairperson.
RESULT: APPROVED [UNANIMOUS]

2. Presentation: Sahuarita Square Vision and Next Steps
Victor Gonzales, Economic Development Director, presented information on Sahuarita
Square, the vision for the project and the next steps to be undertaken by staff, consultants
and stakeholders.
Discussion ensued.

3. Selection of Commissioner to Participate on Splash Pad and Inclusive Playground
Consultant Rating Panel
Smejkal inquired if one of the commissioners would like to serve on a rating panel to
select the design concept consultant for the splash pad and playground at Anamax Park.
A Request for Qualifications (RFQ) outlining the scope of work is posted. The panelists
will read and rate the proposals according to the score factors.
Discussion ensued.
Thomas expressed interest in participating on the panel. M. Ahern recommended
Thomas as the participant on the panel, the rest of the commission concurred.

V. COMMISSIONER AND DIRECTOR REPORT ON CURRENT EVENTS
1. Director and Commissioner Reports
M. Ahern thanked the commission for the opportunity to participate on the Park Utility Box
Artist Panel. M. Ahern was impressed with the submitted art work and the selections for the
utility boxes.
Luna said Red, White and Boom was a hit and thanked staff for their hard work.

Smejkal introduced Teri Bankhead, recently promoted to Assistant Town Manager. As
part of her duties she will oversee Planning, Parks and Recreation, Human Resources
and Communications.
Open Swim and Summer Open Rec have concluded. Open Swim participation numbers
were exponentially higher this year than in past summers. Daddy Daughter Dance was
well attended. Canoe Days is this weekend August 10 and 11. Smejkal summarized the
Activity Guide, which was distributed to the commission. New programs include a movie
series, running series and geocaching workshop. The next 25th Anniversary event is the
Town's Birthday Party September 20th.
The Anza Trail School sports field regeneration project is complete. Wrightson Ridge
School Park is near completion. The maintenance shed at Anamax Park is installed;
phase two is installation of a water tank to meet fire suppression requirements. Fiscal
20 projects are in progress for park furnishing and canopy replacements. Staff is
soliciting design and engineering quotes for the pickleball courts. In addition to the
utility box art, Quail Creek will receive four tile art benches created by local high school
students. Funding for the benches is provided by Pima Association of Governments
(PAG) public art program.
Ken James, Recreation Manager started the end of June. Chad Hill, Senior Maintenance
Worker starts mid August. New custodial and landscape companies started July 1. The
Town hired a graphic designer who will assist all departments including Parks and
Recreation with marketing materials.
Stakeholder meetings were held this summer as requested by Town Council for the
Parks and Recreation Area Design and Development Manual.

Pursuant to A.R.S. § 38-431.02 notice is hereby given to the public that the Sahuarita Parks & Recreation
Commission will hold a meeting at the date and time specified below at the Sahuarita Town Hall Council
Chambers, 375 West Sahuarita Center Way, Sahuarita, Arizona. Members of the Commission will attend
either in person or by telephone conference call.
To better serve our community, the Council Chambers is wheelchair accessible. Persons with a disability
may request a reasonable accommodation, such as a sign language interpreter, by contacting the Town
Clerk’s Office at 520-822-8801. Requests should be made no later than three working days prior to the
meeting to arrange the accommodation.
