Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes Regular Meeting Minutes February 5, 2020 6:30 PM The Parks and Recreation Commission of the Town of Sahuarita met in the Sahuarita Council Chambers, 375 West Sahuarita Center Way, Sahuarita, AZ 85629 on Wednesday, February 5, 2020. I. CALL TO THE PUBLIC No members of the public spoke. III. APPROVAL OF MEETING MINUTES 1. BUSINESS 1. Welcome and Introduction of New Commissioner - Gina Anderson Huckins introduced recently appointed Commissioner Gina Anderson. Anderson provided the commission with a summary of her personal and professional history. RESULT: DISCUSSION ONLY 2. Twin Buttes Land Acquisition Smejkal provided an update on the purchase of 92 acres on Twin Buttes Road and potential land use ideas. Discussion ensued. RESULT: DISCUSSION ONLY 3. Mural Presentation and Request for Interest in Review Panel Smejkal presented photos of the completed mural installation project. Staff and the Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance (SAACA) are planning another round of public art placemaking on various facilities in Town parks. Discussion ensued. Huckins, Thomas and M. Ahern volunteered to participate on the artist selection panel as commission representatives. RESULT: DISCUSSION ONLY 4. Pickleball Court Construction at Quail Creek - Veterans Municipal Park Smejkal presented approved construction drawings for the new pickleball courts at Quail Creek - Veterans Municipal Park, which includes lighting, pathways, a gazebo and flexible seating. Adjacent to the pickleball courts, staff is installing bocce ball, table tennis and corn hole between the playground and ramadas. A grand opening is planned for June in conjunction with the National Recreation and Park Association Family Fitness Day. Discussion ensued. RESULT: DISCUSSION ONLY V. COMMISSIONER AND DIRECTOR REPORT ON CURRENT EVENTS 1. Director and Commissioner Reports Installation of the new net climber at Anamax Park begins this month. The construction phase of the new maintenance shed will be complete once the fire suppression hookup valve is installed on the water tank. Staff is making preparations to move equipment to the shed. An electrical audit is being completed in all parks to ensure there are not any electrical hazards. Security lights at Quail Creek - Veterans Municipal and North Santa Cruz parks are Regular Meeting Minutes- February 5, 2020 Page 2 of 3 Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes being retrofitted with LED lighting. Staff will be completing an irrigation project on the soccer fields at North Santa Cruz Park. The Department received a grant to complete a tree inventory and assessment. The grant includes funding to hire an Arborist to lead the counting project with volunteers. The Town's Tree City USA application was approved; the only agency to receive approval in Arizona. There is nothing new to report on the status of the Pollinator Garden grant. The splash pad and all inclusive playground are on hold due to the necessity of a sewer line, which will be designed this spring. Staff submitted a Capital Improvement Project request for construction of the sewer line for next fiscal year. Recreation programming included a Winter Fun Club. Upcoming programs are pickleball clinics, new art classes for all ages, a Rodeo Fun Club and Leap Year dance. The holiday lighting was increased for the Winter Festival and parade. Bark-A-Rama at Anamax, with demonstrations, vendors and contests was well attended. Beginning in April the Lake Concerts are at 7 p.m. There is a number of initiatives in the budget request for drinking fountains, supplies to help with in house projects and a disc golf course. The budget process includes a series of review meetings over the next several months. Sahuarita Square discussions continue. A consultant is working on the design concept. Members of the Commission will attend either in person or by telephone conference call. To better serve our community, the Council Chambers is wheelchair accessible.
