The Parks and Recreation Commission of the Town of Sahuarita met in the Sahuarita Council Chambers,
375 West Sahuarita Center Way, Sahuarita, AZ 85629 on Wednesday, June 3, 2020.

IV. BUSINESS
1. Update on Fiscal Year 2021 Budget
Smejkal provided an update on the Parks and Recreation Department's fiscal year 2021
budget. The Town Manager will present the overall proposed budget to Town Council at the
June 8 meeting.

2. Proposed Parks and Recreation Fee Changes
Smejkal provided information on proposed changes to the fee schedule.
The Parks and Recreation fee schedule was last updated effective January 1. 2018.
Proposed revisions provide clarification, delete underused/unused fees, add fees for
new types of amenities and simplify fees for tracking purposes.
Discussion ensued.
Proposed changes to the fee schedule will be presented to Town Council on June 8.

3. New Park Mural Presentation
Smejkal presented photos of the recently completed park mural installation project.
Staff and the Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance (SAACA) are planning another
round of mural installations in fiscal year 21.
The Town Communications division is helping develop an art brochure to highlight murals in
Town parks.
Discussion ensued.

V. COMMISSIONER AND DIRECTOR REPORT ON CURRENT EVENTS
1. Director and Commissioner Reports
Smejkal introduced new Senior Office Assistant Rachel Stephenson and announced Laura
Parkin's promotion to Administrative Specialist.
Construction of new pickleball courts and game zone at Quail Creek- Veterans Municipal
park is complete. Landscaping and final touches are in progress and courts will be open by
June 13.

Anamax Park net climber installation is complete, staff will be finishing landscaping in the
coming weeks. The Department purchased replacement furnishings for Anamax Park, these
will be installed in FY 21.
Staff planted trees at Parque Los Arroyos to celebrate Arbor Day in light of event
cancellation. Planning for the grant funded tree inventory is taking place and will happen
later this summer. The Department has also submitted two grants for the pollinator garden
at Anamax Park.
Design for sewer line extension will be completed end of June. Construction of the sewer
was not included in the Town Manager's FY 21 budget proposal; will revisit for FY 22.
Summer programs including recreational swimming and youth camp have been adapted to
fit COVID 19 guidelines. Drive-in movie series will continue through summer, happening on
the third Saturday of June, July, and August. 4th of July will include an aerial show only and
will be held at Wrightson Ridge Park. Public is encouraged to watch from home and near by
parking lots.
Commissioner Allen expressed concern about non-residents dominating use of the new
pickleball courts and reported that the Anza Trail tennis courts are slippery.

Pursuant to A.R.S. § 38-431.02 notice is hereby given to the public that the Sahuarita Parks & Recreation
Commission will hold a meeting at the date and time specified below at the Sahuarita Town Hall Council
Chambers, 375 West Sahuarita Center Way, Sahuarita, Arizona. Members of the Commission will attend
either in person or by telephone conference call.
To better serve our community, the Council Chambers is wheelchair accessible. Persons with a disability
