Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes Regular Meeting Minutes August 5, 2020 6:30 PM The Parks and Recreation Commission of the Town of Sahuarita met in the Sahuarita Council Chambers, 375 West Sahuarita Center Way, Sahuarita, AZ 85629 on Wednesday, August 5, 2020. I. BUSINESS 1. Inquiry of Interest: Artist Review Panel for Fall Park Murals Parks and Recreation Director Nanette Smejkal presented an opportunity for Commissioners to participate on the upcoming artist review panel for fall mural installations. The review panel will tentatively convene the week of August 31. Commissioner Michele Ahern and Chairperson Huckins expressed interest in participating. RESULT: DISCUSSION ONLY 2. Tree Inventory Parks and Facilities Manager Laura Hester provided information on a tree inventory project funded by an Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management grant. An arborist was hired to oversee data collection with the help of volunteers. Data will include tree species, age, location and disease condition. With this information, the arborist will work with staff to create a plan for future tree planting. Interested volunteers age 13 and older can register online through the parks and recreation webpage and must attend training on August 29. Data collection will take place September 12, 19, and 26. Discussion ensued. Commissioners Zatkin, Anderson and Allen expressed interest in participating and/or sharing information with potential volunteers. RESULT: DISCUSSION ONLY 3. Trail Standards and Definitions Smejkal provided information on the current state of trail standards and definitions for the Town. "Aspire 2035: Sahuarita's General Plan" includes a trails map from Pima County's "Pima Regional Trail System Master Plan"(PRTSM), but Town Council did not adopt Pima County's other standards and definitions. The Parks and Recreation Design and Development Standards Manual (PRADSM) provides standards for residential developers, but not for Town departments. Discussion ensued. Draft trail standards were provided with the agenda packet. Commissioners were asked to read the information and prepare to discuss at the next meeting. RESULT: DISCUSSION ONLY V. Director and Commissioner Reports Smejkal provided an overview of completed summer programming. All programs were modified to small group settings and did not allow for drop-in participation; registration was required. This format will continue for fall programs. Staff created virtual activities and the Wizardry Fest, a completely online event. Virtual programming will continue in August. Fall programming includes modified fitness classes, after school programs and events that require participants to stay with other household members. Felipe Hernandez was promoted to Senior Maintenance Worker. New staff member Dylan Pruitt starts August 10 to fill the open Maintenance Worker position. Parks staff retrofitted the baseball field at North Santa Cruz Park, adding turf and irrigation to the infield. Trail use counting equipment was purchased. Staff will begin experimenting with data collection of current usage of trails. The trail counters can sense pedestrians and bicyclists. Commissioner Zatkin inquired about the Land and Water Conservation Fund appropriations recently approved by President Trump. Funds will be administered by state agencies using competitive grant processes. Parks and Facilities Manager Hester provided updates on slippery tennis courts at Anza Trail, which staff will repaint with a texturized product and answered Commissioner Allen's questions about pickleball.
