The Parks and Recreation Commission of the Town of Sahuarita met in the Sahuarita Council Chambers,
375 West Sahuarita Center Way, Sahuarita, AZ 85629 on Wednesday, November 4, 2020.

1. Approval of the September 2, 2020 Commission Meeting Minutes

IV. BUSINESS
1. Park Tree Inventory
Parks & Facilities Manager Laura Hester presented tree inventory data collected from Town
parks. Anamax Park is the only park unfinished. Staff, volunteers, and arborist consultant
will also inventory trees along roadways. Once all data is collected, the consultant will write
a report with recommendations to achieve future tree diversification.
Volunteers have included families, Boy Scouts, at risk youth groups, Commissioner Jeff
Allen, and others.
Discussion ensued.
Commissioner Allen commented on the great work done by younger volunteers on
dates he attended and offered a correction for terminology used on the PowerPoint.
Vice Chair Thomas inquired about future volunteer dates to complete the inventory. A
tentative date for November 14th has been set with available volunteer groups.

2. Recreation Program and Event Highlights
Recreation Manager Ken James provided highlights and updates on recreation programs and
events since March 2020. Staff facilitated virtual programs and events and modified in
person programs for social distancing.
An example of a modified event was the Drive-Thru Trunk or Treat; 3709 people
attended in vehicles, 500 pumpkins, and 3,000 candy bags were distributed. The
Holiday Lights Parade in December will follow a similar drive-thru model.
Discussion ensued.
Commissioner Zatkin congratulated staff on their work since March and suggested that
articles should be sent to the local newspaper.
Chairperson Huckins thanked staff for their work.

3. 2021 Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting Calendar
Commissioners reviewed the 2021 Commission meeting calendar.
Chairperson Huckins inquired about changing meeting time to 6 p.m. starting in
calendar year 2021. All commissioners present agreed to the change.

1. Director and Commissioner Reports
Parks and Recreation Director Nanette Smejkal informed commissioners that the
Department is looking for entries for the Holiday Lights Parade. Stationary floats,
displays, musical entertainment, dance and theatrical groups are all welcome to
participate.
New Parks Foreman Dylan Pruitt started work with the Department in September and
Maintenance Worker Alex Roman began November 2nd.
Parks staff completed overseeding to prepare turf for the winter months. Furnishings
(trash cans, picnic tables, and benches) are being installed at Anamax Park. A bottle filler
drinking fountain has been installed at North Santa Cruz Park, six total will be installed
this year. Staff added bleachers to Wrightson Ridge ball fields.
Park murals are in progress; Anamax concession stand is complete, the artist group
painted all sides and the public is enjoying it. Remaining murals are expected to be
complete by end of November.
Town events will be featured on the cover page of the November/December Chamber
of Commerce activity guide. The Holiday Lights Parade, Holiday Artisan Market, and
decorations at the Municipal Complex are mentioned.

Commissioner Zatkin inquired about choral groups performing at the Holiday Lights
Parade. They are welcome to participate and send in an application.
Vice Chair Thomas asked about the viewing route. A revised traffic route is in progress
for parade planning.
Commissioner Allen reported he attended the Drive-Thru Trunk or Treat and
commented on the success.

Pursuant to A.R.S. § 38-431.02 notice is hereby given to the public that the Sahuarita Parks & Recreation
Commission will hold a meeting at the date and time specified below at the Sahuarita Town Hall Council
Chambers, 375 West Sahuarita Center Way, Sahuarita, Arizona. Members of the Commission will attend
either in person or by telephone conference call.
To better serve our community, the Council Chambers is wheelchair accessible. Persons with a disability
may request a reasonable accommodation, such as a sign language interpreter, by contacting the Town
Clerk’s Office at 520-822-8801. Requests should be made no later than three working days prior to the
