COMMENDATION The Salinas Rotary Club presented a check to the Franciscan Workers of Junipero Serra to support their services. PRESENTATION United Way of Monterey County Katy Castagna, Executive Director of United Way of Monterey County provide her report highlight three main service areas which include financial stability, child care, and housing. Some of the financial services provided are the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), the stuff the bus campaign in partnership with the Monterey County Office of Education and local school districts, and the 2-1-1 information referral services. In the area of housing, United Way increased its focus on providing housing support services, serving as the fiscal agent for the homeless census, family resource center, partnered with Monterey Bay Housing Trust and collaborative efforts with the Farmworker Housing Study and action plan. United Way continues to provide support in the area of childcare via increasing the number of subsided childcare slots, funding the gab for Migrant Head Start and increasing local solutions such as the Kindergarten Bridge in Castroville and the Informal Caretaker Network out of the City of Gonzales. The motion carried by the following vote: Ayes: 5- Councilmember Barrera, Councilmember Craig, Councilmember Davis, Councilmember McShane and Councilmember Villegas Noes: 2- Councilmember De La Rosa and Mayor Gunter Enactment No: RES 21213 COUNCILMEMBERS’ REPORTS, APPOINTMENTS AND FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS Councilmember Barrera reported he volunteered at Alliance on Aging on Father’s Day and encouraged Council to visit the Alliance on Aging to show support of the senior community. Councilmember Davis reported that the community cleanup held at Acosta Plaza was a success and thanked the community for their efforts resulting in 79% waste diversion. Councilmember De La Rosa thanked the maintenance staff for their efforts in cleaning up Laurel Extension. Councilmember Craig reported she will be traveling with the Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC) to Oakland, California to discuss the priorities for the capital corridor joint powers authority. She reported that TAMC begun their HWY 156 Expansion meetings and reported that the project will address the hospitality needs in the County. Councilmember Craig reported that she attended the Public Safety Facility meeting where they discussed the needs for a police station and community needs. In closing, she reported that both she and Councilmember De La Rosa requested a community meeting from Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority regarding the future of the transfer station as they had very low public attendance at their last meeting. Councilmember Villegas announced the Ernie Camacho baseball camp will begin on July 1 and encouraged Salinas youth to participate. He announced he will be attending the Monterey Bay Air Resource District meeting on June 21 on behalf of Councilmember McShane. Councilmember Villegas reported that he spoke with the Salinas Union High City of Salinas Page 6 City Council Meeting Minutes - Unofficial June 20, 2017 School District Superintendent regarding the dialogue surrounding the school resource officers and encouraged the public to reach out to the school district in support of the city’s community policing efforts. In closing, Councilmember Villegas commended both the Police and Fire Department for their professionalism and dedication. Councilmember McShane requested a more robust city events calendar. Request was second by Councilmember Villegas. He announced he will not be attending the Fireworks Subcommittee meeting as he will be representing the City at the Clean Air Leaders Awards event. Councilmember McShane further requested an update on the Transient Occupancy Tax received from local hotels and motels, including a report on long-term rentals and H2A housing. He additional requested the City reconvene the Rail Policy Committee. Councilmember McShane expressed concerns regarding Mann Packing moving to Gonzales, California, and requested an update the AgLand trust. Councilmember McShane requested the City develop a brochure to inform the public on how to report concerns to the City, including reporting via the MySalinas App. Councilmember McShane announced a Turkish delegation will be visiting Salinas during the month of August. Mayor Gunter reported he visited the County building at Natividad Road at Laurel Drive and 321 North Main Street as potential sites for a temporary warming shelter. Mayor Gunter announced he attended the California Rodeo Scholarship Awards event and the City/County Animal Services Committee. Mayor Gunter announced the Jr. Giants kickoff will take place on Saturday, June 24 and the Airport Tenant Appreciation Day event is also taking place on June 24 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.
