Page 2 of 4  April 17, 2024 Shawano, Wisconsin CALL TO ORDER • Chairperson Lynnae Zahringer called the Senior Citizens Commission meeting to order on Wednesday April 17, 2024 at 9:00 AM at Shawano City Hall. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE ROLL CALL • Members present: Alderman Jack Young, Lynnae Zahringer, Joan Porter-Priem, Lois Flaig, Bonnie Wolf, and Dennis Zdiarstek. • Absent: Mayor Bruce Milavitz. • Also present: Heidi Russell, Roger Olson, and Paula Landau Civic Center Coordinator. COMPLIANCE WITH OPEN MEETING LAW • Chairperson Zahringer stated that we were in compliance with the open meeting law. APPROVAL OF AGENDA AND/OR OTHER MATTERS AUTHORIZED BY LAW • Motion by Porter-Priem to approve the proposed agenda, seconded by Zdiarstek. Motion carried. APPROVAL OF SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSION MINUTES OF MARCH 20, 2024 • Motion by Wolf to approve the proposed minutes seconded by Flaig. Motion carried. PUBLIC COMMENT PLEASE KEEP COMMENTS TO 3 MINUTES • Alderman Jack Young introduced himself to the members. Jack lives 2 blocks away, by the Rec Center. Jack grew up in Shawano and a lot of people may know his dad, Jerry from Jerry’s Country Sound. Jack raised his kids here and has been a caregiver for the last 19 years. That is part of the reason Jack wanted to be a part of this committee; Jack took care of a lot of Senior and disabled people. Jack would like to be an advocate for them. At this point Jack will be observing and asking questions. Discussion followed. PRESENTATION FROM KENDRA BRUSEWITZ OUTREACH & PREVENTION SPECIALIST, AND BRENDA MARQUARDT ADULT PROTECTIVE SERVICES • Kendra Brusewitz and Brenda Marquardt were unable to attend. We will set up another time for them to give their presentation. REPORTS: • Civic Center Report: Paula Landau submitted a report for April to the committee members on the issues and/or happenings at the center. • Gift Shop Report: Bonnie submitted a report for April. April has been a slow month. Today the whole education community will be holding their District meeting in Gresham. The gift shop donated 3 baskets for the basket auction. Friday the 19th is Ladies Day in Shawano; the gift shop will stay open longer. In May the gift shop donated a basket to the Women’s Fashion Show, to make people aware of the gift shop and its location. June is Rhubarb Fest and July is Shawano Fest. Discussion followed. • Commission on Aging Report: Heidi submitted a report for April. The Farmers Market Vouchers will be distributed in June and have increased them from $35.00 to $45.00. The bus list is out for trips for this year. Some of the places are the Boat in Waupaca, the Castle, which is the History Museum in Appleton; and in the Fall the Leigh Yawkey Museum in Wausau, which is free to Seniors. The Navarino Trips have started again. In Page 1 of 2 Page 3 of 4  April there were 85 people, and the presentation was on John Muir. In May the presentation will be on Frogs and Salamanders. On June 20th at the Middle School, we will be having Senior Info Day. Speakers include: Dr. Alonzo Kelly on isolation, Carrie Grieves on Healthy Living, Stacie Schiebe from Options for Independent Living on Making Your Home Safe and Accessible and Chef Ben from the Pines on the Joys of Cooking for Two. The day is “Living Your Best Life!” It will be a free day, but you need to register. Discussion followed. BILLS • None. OLD BUSINESS • Rental Conflicts: None. NEW BUSINESS • Any damage from the storm: None. • Spring projects coming up: Paula reported that the projects were, Emergency Lighting in the basement, Civic Center gardens and Exterior painting of the Civic Center. Discussion followed. • Equipment needs for the Summer: None. • Round table discussion: Zahringer commented on the future Agendas should be garden updates. Porter-Priem asked if the list for special speakers needed to be updated? Roger Olson gave Paula some contacts for upcoming speakers. The garden will be tilled, May 6-10. Discussion followed. SET NEXT MEETING DATE • The next Senior Citizens Commission meeting will be on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 at 9:00 am at City Hall.
