STERLING HEIGHTS CULTURAL COMMISSION
Minutes of Tuesday, February 5, 2013 Meeting
Location: Sterling Heights City Hall, 40555 Utica Road, Sterling Heights, MI 48313,
Conference Room 202, 6 p.m.
Members Present: Josephine Berthet, Jan Burns, Frank DiMaria, Grace Finazzo, Margaret
Frontiera, Eboni LaMar, Jeanne Schabath, Donald Schinzing, John Stampor
Members Absent: Maurice Batarseh, Ronald Bindle, David Bollman
Representing the City: Steve Guitar and Karen Kazmer
COMMUNICATION FROM CITIZENS:
Guest Joe Burns proposed a 5k run during Sterlingfest and a 1-mile run before the Memorial Day
Parade begins.
Joe Burns and Steve Guitar will work together, along with Aaron Burgess of the Police
Department and Parks and Recreation staff members, to see if such events can be organized.
Commission members suggested planning a run only during Sterlingfest for 2013.
Monies raised would go in part to the Cultural Commission; Joe Burns would act as coordinator
of event.
Hanson’s Running Shop will assist with the race.
“Sterlingfast 5k” would take place along the trails from Utica into Dodge Park.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Motion to approve the meeting minutes of the January 2, 2013 Cultural Commission made by
Grace Finazzo.
Seconded by: John Stampor Ayes: all Nays: none
AGENDA ITEMS:
A. Memorial Day Parade
- The Memorial Day Parade will not have an
official theme name; best float award will be
determined on best patriotic display.
- Motion to extend an invitation to Nick Lapajenko
to serve as Grand Marshal for the 2013 Memorial
Day Parade made by Frank DiMaria.

B. Sterlingfest
- Motion to approve 2013 Sterlingfest artist, food vendor
and restaurant applications as printed made by Jan Burns.
Seconded by: Josephine Berthet Ayes: all Nays: none
C. Artist of the Month
- Don Schinzing proposed the Artist of the Month program
be changed to a two-month display instead of one month.
After much discussion, it was determined to change to a
two-month display and this practice will be re-evaluated
in a year.
Motion to change artist display to a two-month rotation for
the Artist of the Month Program made by Josephine Berthet.
Seconded by: Margaret Frontiera Ayes: all Nays: none
- Don Schinzing is no longer available for the media presentation
for Artist of the Month; Eboni LaMar will attend media
presentation, if not available, Jeanne Schabath will attend.
- Pastor Michail Curro of the Interfaith Center for Racial Justice
contacted Steve Guitar requesting an art exhibit by high school
students be allowed to display artwork as part of the Artist of
the Month program. Pastor Curro stated ten pieces of art,
framed and/or matted, would be displayed.
Motion to accept the ICRJ Traveling Art Exhibit as the
March 2013 Artist of the Month program made by Frank DiMaria.

- Claudia Blanchard will be the Artist of the Month for April & May.
OLD BUSINESS:
- Steve Guitar is meeting with the Purchasing Department to
obtain bids for the sculpture project.
- Don Schinzing reminded commission members of the
agreement made with the Community Foundation for
the Oracle sculpture.
NEW BUSINESS:
- Steve Guitar stated artist applications for Sterlingfest would
be ready for mailing the week of February 11th; any
commission members available to assist with the mailing
are asked to contact Community Relations. The city will
contact all members when applications are available to be
worked on.
- Margaret Fronteria announced that her father and long-time
Cultural Commissioner, Bob Wright, will be 95 years old on
March 7th.
Motion to adjourn Cultural Commission meeting at 7 p.m. made by Margaret Fronteria.
