STERLING HEIGHTS CULTURAL COMMISSION
Minutes of Tuesday, April 2, 2013 Meeting
Location: Sterling Heights City Hall, 40555 Utica Road, Sterling Heights, MI 48313,
Conference Room 202, 6 p.m.
Members Present: Maurice Batarseh, Ronald Bindle, David Bollman, Frank DiMaria, Eboni
LaMar, Jeanne Schabath, Donald Schinzing, John Stampor
Members Absent: Josephine Berthet, Jan Burns, Grace Finazzo, Margaret Frontiera
Representing the City: Steve Guitar and Karen Kazmer
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Motion to approve the meeting minutes of the March 5, 2013 Cultural Commission made by
John Stampor.
Seconded by: Jeanne Schabath Ayes: all Nays: none
AGENDA ITEMS:
A. Memorial Day Parade
- Due to Federal budget constraints due
to the sequester, all fly-overs have been
cancelled.
- At this time, four bands and four scout troops
have registered to attend the parade.
Community Relations will contact bands and
scout troops to encourage participation.
Stevenson High School Band will not participate
this year but has committed to 2014 parade.
- Commission members discussed ideas to encourage
bands to participate in the parade. Members suggested
a monetary prize for best band and runner-up might
entice more bands to attend parade.
- Motion to determine criteria and prize amount to be
awarded to Best Band and Runner-Up at the 2014 Memorial
Day Parade made by Maurice Batarseh.
Ayes: 7 John Stampor abstained
B. Sterlingfest
- 98 artist applications and four Coach’s Ice Cream
Kidzfest applications have been received. Bands
have been secured for all stage areas.
- Maurice Batarseh, Ron Bindle, Jan Burns and three
artists will review all artist applications to make
recommendations to the Cultural Commission when
jurying applications. Sub-committee will meet
April 23rd or 24th.
- “Sterlingfast 5k Run” will take place on Saturday,
July 27, at 9 a.m. Police & DPW have committed to
assist with the run; Joe Burns is working with
volunteers to finalize plans.
- Cultural Commission members have agreed to commit
volunteer hours at Sterlingfest to sell tickets for the
Upton House Painting Raffle. Proceeds from the sale of
tickets will be put towards the Oracle Fund with the
Community Foundation. Commission members are
dedicated to promoting arts & culture within the city of
Sterling Heights.
- Motion to sell raffle tickets during Sterlingfest for the
raffle of the Upton House Painting made by Ronald Bindle.
Seconded by: Frank DiMaria Ayes: 7 John Stampor
abstained
Commission members agreed to determine pricing of
raffle tickets and sign-up to volunteer to sell tickets at
the June meeting.
C. Artist of the Month
- No applications were received for review for the
“Featured Artist” program.
