STERLING HEIGHTS CULTURAL COMMISSION
Minutes of Tuesday, February 3 , 2015 Meeting
Location: Sterling Heights City Hall, 40555 Utica Road, Sterling Heights, MI

Members Present: Maurice Batarseh, David Bollman, Jan Burns, Frank DiMaria,
Grace Finazzo, Margaret Frontiera, Jeanne Schabath, Donald Schinzing, John
Stampor, Mona Yassine
Members Absent: Ron Bindle, Shawn Taylor
Representing the City: Bridget Doyle & Karen Kazmer
Meeting called to order at 6 p.m.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES :
Motion to approve the meeting minutes of the January 6, 2015 Cultural
Commission made by Grace Finazzo.
Seconded by: Margaret Frontiera Ayes: all Nays: none
AGENDA ITEMS :
A. Featured Artist
Pastor Michail Curro of the Interfaith Center for Racial Justice is
requesting the art exhibit by high school students be considered for the
Featured Artist for the month of March 2015.
Motion to select the student artwork from the Interfaith Center for
Racial Justice as Featured Artist for March 2015 made by Frank
DiMaria.
Seconded by: Jeanne Schabath Ayes: 8 Nays: 2
Members discussed the Featured Artist application.
David Bollman drafted Governing Conditions for the application;
commission members will review and vote on adoption of the
recommendations
Frank DiMaria stated incomplete Featured Artist applications should
not be considered
A media release seeking applicants for the Featured Artist went out in
January 2015; the Sterling Heights Magazine will feature an article on
the program.
Dominic Orow’s application for Featured Artist was denied; members
request a letter be written to Mr. Orow encouraging him to resubmit.
Motion to approve a letter is written to Dominic Orow welcoming him to
resubmit a Featured Artist application for consideration emphasizing
the application be complete and pictures of different artwork pieces be
submitted made by Donald Schinzing.

B. Memorial Day Parade
A letter to Richard Shoonover inviting him to be Parade Honorary
Grand Marshal will be mailed.
Commission members would like to hear the tap performance before
confirming the performer at the Parade ceremony.
Jeanne Schabath will contact John Linn of the Arsenal of Democracy
regarding parade participation.
Donald Schinzing will check with groups who perform Civil War Re-
enactments.
Frank DiMaria has a referral for the 2016 Parade Grand Marshal; Mr.
DiMaria will follow-up.
C. Sterlingfest
Jurying of artist applications for Sterlingfest will take place at the May
meeting.
OLD BUSINESS:
Bridget Doyle stated the request for name change of the Cultural
Commission will be presented at the February 17, 2015 City Council
Meeting.
NEW BUSINESS:
David Bollman expressed his displeasure of City Council and City
Management not considering asking the Cultural Commission for input
on the change of city logo. Mr. Bollman stated many members on the
commission are artists and should have been consulted regarding this
matter.
Donald Schinzing presented an article regarding the Anton Art Center
awarding mini-grants to Macomb organizations. Mr. Schinzing
recommends the Cultural Commission apply in order to reinstate the
Sculpture Walk Program.
Bridget Doyle will take a picture of the Cultural Commission for the
website at the April meeting.
Motion to adjourn at 6:50 p.m. made by Margaret Frontiera.
