STERLING HEIGHTS ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of Tuesday, April 7 , 2015 Meeting Location: Sterling Heights City Hall, 40555 Utica Road, Sterling Heights, MI 48313, Conference Room 202 Members Present: Ronald Bindle, David Bollman, Frank DiMaria, Grace Finazzo, Margaret Frontiera, Jeanne Schabath, Donald Schinzing, John Stampor, Mona Yassine Members Absent: Maurice Batarseh, Jan Burns, Shawn Taylor Representing the City: Bridget Doyle & Karen Kazmer Meeting called to order at 6 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES : Motion to approve the meeting minutes of the March 3, 2015 Cultural Commission made by Jeanne Schabath. Seconded by: John Stampor Ayes: all Nays: none COMMUNICATION FROM CITIZENS: Collins Elementary School forgot to submit a W-9 in 2014 for award given to the first ten float applicants in the 2014 Memorial Day Parade. Commission members agreed to pay Collins School the award. AGENDA ITEMS : A. Featured Artist  No applications were received for the Featured Artist program.  Bridget Doyle will utilize social media to promote this program.  Jeanne Schabath recommends commission members solicit artists at Sterlingfest to apply for this program. B. Memorial Day Parade  As of this date, no bands have sent in applications for the parade.  Donald Schinzing will contact Warren Woods’s band director.  Ronald Bindle stated the Grand Marshal is requesting assistance in writing his speech; Ms. Doyle will assist.  Community Relations will request the DPW Sign Shop make signs for the bands to “perform” for award.  Donald Schinzing stated the band guidelines should be re-written regarding band uniforms.  Over $10,000 has been received in sponsorship money from local businesses.  Commission members would like to distribute water at the end of the parade route for marchers in the parade; members have agreed to volunteer and handle. C. Sterlingfest  David Bollman inquired if Jan Burns has requested an artist booth at Sterlingfest. Ms. Burns did not pay for booth space in 2014; Mr. Bollman would also like booth space this year. Commission members agreed to give booth space to Ms. Burns and Mr. Bollman free of charge. OLD BUSINESS: Frank DiMaria requested the commission review and investigates the painting of “Spiral Note”. NEW BUSINESS:  Jeanne Schabath attended Eastern Market’s Made in Michigan event. Ms. Schabath recommends members consider adding this feature at future Sterlingfests.  Ms. Schabath stated Mt. Clemens will be hosting a Made in Michigan event on May 9th & 10th.  Ronald Bindle announced his son has been selected as an artist in the “Canvas Pontiac” exhibit. Presentation will be on Saginaw Street in Downtown Pontiac on June 11th, at 7 p.m. at Club Elektrisity.  The Langsford Men’s Choir will perform on Tuesday, May 19th, at St. Malachy’s; for more information contact Donald Schinzing.
