STERLING HEIGHTS ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of Tuesday, February 2 , 2016 Meeting Location: Sterling Heights City Hall, 40555 Utica Road, Sterling Heights, MI 48313, Conference Room 202 Members Present: David Bollman, Jan Burns, Frank DiMaria, Grace Finazzo, Margaret Frontiera, Jeanne Schabath, John Stampor, Mona Yassine Members Absent: Maurice Batarseh, Ron Bindle, Judi Dent, Shawn Taylor Representing the City: Bridget Doyle, Karen Kazmer Meeting called to order at 6:05 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES : Motion to approve the meeting minutes of the January 5, 2016 Art Commission made by Jan Burns. Seconded by: John Stampor Ayes: all Nays: none AGENDA ITEMS : A. Featured Artist  Rev Michael Curro of Interfaith Center for Racial Justice requests the winning artwork of the MLK contest be on display in April 2016. Commission members agreed.  Frank DiMaria inquired of Jan Burns interest as Featured Artist for May-June 2016. Jan agreed. Motion to select Jan Burns as May-June 2016 Featured Artist made by Frank DiMaria. Seconded by: John Stampor Ayes: all Nays: none B. Memorial Day Parade  Bridget Doyle stated pending final approval from UCS, the parade will end at Davis Jr. High. Letters will be attached to parade applications to advise participants of this one year change. C. Sterlingfest  Applications for Sterlingfest will be ready in the next week.  Jan Burns inquired if bridge construction in Dodge Park will alter the route for Sterlingfast; Community Relations will contact Parks & Recreation. OLD BUSINESS:  Bridget Doyle thanked all Art Commission members who attended the Strategic Planning Meeting in support of the Public Art Plan.  Members will brainstorm ideas and assist on what type of art should be displayed, and what areas would be most visible for residents.  With the construction on city grounds, Frank DiMaria requested the sculpture near the Library be illuminated. Refurbishing of the sculpture will also be considered.  Bridge Doyle contacted Kyle Langlois, director of Parks & Recreation, regarding the Art in the Park proposition.  Second Thursday of June-September (June 9, July 14, August 11, September 8)  5:30 – 7:30  Rental fee for pavilion reduced to $33  Jeanne Schabath will provide Community Relations with contact info for art teacher NEW BUSINESS:  Bridget Doyle proposed a tour of the DIA to members of the Art Commission and Ethnic Community Committee. The tour would be on a Friday evening and the City would provide two shuttle buses from City Hall to the DIA. Tentatives dates are April 15 or April 23; members of the Ethnic Committee will be informed of this tour at their February 11 meeting.  David Bollman suggested the Art Commission sponsor an event for area teens to create a painted quilt. It was suggested business sponsor/promote this activity. Mr. Bollman and Jan Burns will investigate this proposition and report to members.  Discussion on a contest for local artists to paint a bench or other piece of medium near bus stops or other visible public areas; commission members will brainstorm this idea.
