STERLING HEIGHTS ARTS COMMISSION
Minutes of Tuesday, January 3, 2017 Meeting
Location: Sterling Heights City Hall, 40555 Utica Road, Sterling Heights, MI

Members Present: Ron Bindle, Jan Burns, Judi Dent, Frank DiMaria, Jazmine
Early, Grace Finazzo, Margaret Frontiera, Jeanne Schabath, John Stampor,
Mona Yassine, Stacy Ziarko
Members Absent: David Bollman
Representing the City: Bridget Doyle, Karen Kazmer
Meeting called to order at 6:00
COMMUNICATION FROM CITIZENS:
A resident contacted Ron Bindle regarding the condition of the Upton House. Per
Jeanne Schabath the Citizens Advisory Committee has approved $50,000 for
repairs and improvements to the Upton House.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES :
Motion to approve the meeting minutes of the November 1, 2016 Art Commission
made by Frank DiMaria .
Seconded by: Jazmine Early Ayes: all Nays: none
AGENDA ITEMS :
A. Featured Artist
No applications were received for review for the Featured Artist
program.
B. Memorial Day Parade
Community Relations will contact Greg Bowman regarding his
participation as Grand Marshal of the 2017 Memorial Day Parade.
Commission members reviewed the parade application; guidelines will
be updated on the application and application will be noted as
amended on January 3, 2017.
Guideline #1 will include wording regarding individuals who are not
elected or appointed are not be allowed to participate with unrelated
or outside groups (wording will first be approved by City Attorney
Motion to select “Honoring Service & Sacrifice” as the theme for the
38th Annual Sterling Heights Memorial Day Parade made by Ron
Bindle.
Seconded by Stacy Ziarko Ayes: all Nays: none
The application will include a link which will provide suggestions for
floats to focus on the parade theme.
Commission members request the theme be highlighted on the parade
application.
Jeanne Schabath suggested the Traveling Michigan Vietnam Veteran
Memorial Wall and the Missing Man Table is present at the parade.
Ron Bindle had suggested the City partner with the Detroit Parade
Company for floats/big heads at the parade.
C. Sterlingfest
Commission members would like an artist tent at Sterlingfest strictly for
youth.
Judi Dent suggests a flyer be made inviting young artists to
participate; Ms. Dent will distribute
Stacy Ziarko stated the Plymouth Art Fair features a youth tent
Members agreed to a minimal charge for the artists
Bridget Doyle suggests two-four artist booths be reserved for “fine
artists”.
Commission members would vote on selected artists
Artists would have to apply for a spot
Artists would be first-time artists to Sterlingfest
Selected artists would only be allowed as a one-time selection
Application and letter would state “you are being invited to apply”
Selected artists would be charged a nominal fee
A media release would promote this new initiative
D. Election of 2017 Art Commission Officers
Motion to elect Jeanne Schabath as Art Commission Chair and Stacy
Ziarko as Art Commission Co-Chair made by Ron Bindle.
Seconded by: Mona Yassine Ayes: all Nays: none
OLD BUSINESS:
Mona Yassine spoke with an art teacher regarding the Children Art
Program; Ms. Yassine will invite the teacher to the February meeting
NEW BUSINESS:
Margaret Frontiera announced she is resigning from the Art
Commission since she has moved to Shelby Township.
Motion to adjourn meeting at 7:05 p.m. made by Ron Bindle.
