City of Sunnyvale Meeting Minutes Arts Commission Wednesday, February 19, 2014 7:00 PM Neighborhood Room - Recreation Building, Sunnyvale Community Center, 550 E. Remington Drive, Sunnyvale, CA 94087 CALL TO ORDER 7:00 p.m. SALUTE TO THE FLAG ROLL CALL Present: 5 - Commissioner Vinita Karun Commissioner Suzanne Moshier Chair Misuk Park Commissioner Shawnte Santos Vice Chair Robert Sumner Commissioner Karun arrived at 7:02 p.m. Vice Chair Sumner arrived at 7:08 p.m. Council Liaison Whittum was not present. PRESENTATION Esther Tokihiro from Santa Clara County Office of Education presented the County’s initiative, Artspiration, which supports professional development, advocacy and student engagement in the visual and performing arts. She encouraged communication with local schools to advocate for funding Art Education as part of the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and the Arts) curriculum. PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENTS None CONSENT CALENDAR 1.A. 14-0232 Approval of Draft Minutes of November 20, 2013 City of Sunnyvale Page 1 Arts Commission Meeting Minutes February 19, 2014 Commissioner Moshier moved, and Commissioner Santos seconded, approval of the consent calendar as presented. Motion carried unanimously with Vice Chair Sumner abstaining as he did not attend that meeting. Yes: 4 - Commissioner Karun Commissioner Moshier Chair Park Commissioner Santos No: 0 Abstain: 1 - Vice Chair Sumner PUBLIC COMMENTS None PUBLIC HEARINGS/GENERAL BUSINESS 2 14-0237 Discussion and Approval of the 2014 Work Plan Superintendent Wax reviewed the Work Plan template and provided the Commissioners an opportunity to modify the work plan. Chair Park confirmed that AIPD items will be added through-out the year. Vice Chair Sumner moved, and Commissioner Karun seconded, approval of the work plan as presented. Motion carried unanimously. Chair Park opened and closed the public hearing at 7:20 p.m. 3 14-0238 Art on Utility Boxes Update Community Services Manager, Tegan McLane, provided an overview of local municipalities which decorate utility boxes with art. Information included aspects of the process such as artist selection, community involvement and community satisfaction. She provided details about Sunnyvale’s graffiti cleanup costs which impact some utility boxes. She explained the different methods of applying art to boxes, the maintenance required to preserve the art work, and the controversies associated with these types of programs. Ms. McLane answered Commissioner questions regarding which method of application was more favorable, which programs use artwork submitted from schools, and how programs decide which boxes to cover. She committed to providing photos of projects and a sample artist contract. COMMISSIONER ORAL COMMENTS City of Sunnyvale Page 2 Arts Commission Meeting Minutes February 19, 2014 Vice Chair Sumner announced that he is moving from Sunnyvale and this is his last meeting. The Commissioners thanked him for his contributions and expressed congratulations and good luck to him. Chair Park expressed interest in a fundraiser at the Hands on The Arts event and suggested selling water balloons. STAFF ORAL COMMENTS Superintendent Wax informed the Commission of the 2015 infrastructure project at the Community Center. The project will include renovation and repair of mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems, and building roofs to extend the facilities' lifecycle, increase energy efficiency and better meet applicable building codes for accessibility and fire safety.
