City of Sunnyvale Meeting Minutes - Final Arts Commission Wednesday, March 16, 2022 7:00 PM Telepresence Meeting: City Web Stream CALL TO ORDER Pursuant to Government Code Subdivision 54953(e), the meeting was conducted telephonically; pursuant to state law, the City Council made the necessary findings by adopting Resolution No. 1089-21, reaffirmed on February 22, 2022. Chair Eskridge called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. via teleconference. ROLL CALL Present: 4 - Chair Dawna Eskridge Vice Chair Agnes Veith Commissioner Winnie Lam Commissioner Sue Serrone Council Liaison Larrson (present) PRESENTATION A 22-0374 Sunnyvale Cultural Celebration featuring Hands on the Arts (Finalize Project and Plans) Kristin Dance, Recreation Services Coordinator, provided a presentation on art projects to be considered for the Sunnyvale Cultural Celebration Featuring Hands on The Arts Festival. Options included: cut-out photo board, Native American talking stick, rock painting, may pole, mural with new Sunnyvale icon, and recycled sculpture or project. Would patrons experience issues with taking turns to paint the canvas? Staff plans to lay the canvas flat on a table so that 5-10 participants will be able to paint at a time. Is staff considering having children create their own props for the photo booth? Yes. City of Sunnyvale Page 1 Arts Commission Meeting Minutes - Final March 16, 2022 Staff administered a voice vote. The option with the most 1st place votes was the cut-out photo board. Kristin will follow-up at the next meeting with specific plans for the event. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None. CONSENT CALENDAR 1 22-0375 Approve the Arts Commission Meeting Minutes of February 9, 2022 Vice Chair Serrone moved and Commissioner Lam seconded the motion to approve the consent calendar as presented. The motion carried by the following vote: Yes: 4 - Chair Eskridge Vice Chair Veith Commissioner Lam Commissioner Serrone No: 0 PUBLIC HEARINGS/GENERAL BUSINESS 2 22-0210 Approve Art in Private Development Project - DeAnza Properties at Pastoria Avenue/803 W. El Camino Real Kristin Dance provided a brief introduction to the Art in Private Development project. Kathy Smyrniotis, property representative, and Charlie Gadeken, artist, provided a presentation for the DeAnza Properties location. Highlights included: background, location, concept, illustration and previous work. Commissioners inquired and staff responded. Can the project include colors or information to identify that monarch butterflies are incorporated? Yes, developer can include orange lights or signage that clarifies that monarch butterflies are shown. Commissioner Veith moved and Vice Chair Serrone seconded the motion to approve Alternative 1: Recommend approval of the artwork as it is proposed. No study issues approved in previous meeting were proposed. NON-AGENDA ITEMS & COMMENTS -Commissioner Comments None. -Staff Comments Damon Sparacino introduced Michelle Perera, Director of Library and Recreation Services, to the Arts Commission. Ricky Le informed the Commission that starting in April the Commission would be conducted in a hybrid model that would allow for participants to attend virtually and in-person. Staff will order name badges and name plates for Commission members. Further instruction will be provided after City Council's meeting on March 22, 2022. Trenton Hill provided an update regarding the Sunnyvale Toyota art piece relocation. The sculpture has been relocated on the site at 989 W. El Camino Real.
