Director Rosenblum noted the following:
Council approved the FY 2014/15 budget at their June 24 meeting. Key changes
for the Library include restoring full services on Thursday evenings between 6 and
9 p.m. and chair replacement. In addition, the Library will continue to utilize $60,000
from an existing librarian vacancy to augment the collection material budget.
The Library has been awarded a $5,300 grant to be one of the first public libraries
to publish its own eBook. Part of the grant funds will be used for the formation of a
new professional group, Bay Area Library ePublishers (BALE). In the Fall, BALE
panelists will review and rank submissions of short stories and poetry and the top
ranking submissions will be published in the Library's eBook next year.
Adult Services Librarian Liz Hickok has been promoted to the position of
Supervising Librarian of Technical Services.
In the first 25 days since opening for registration, 1,355 children, 466 teens, and
443 adults signed up to participate in the Library's Summer Reading Program,
Paws to read.
A team of Google employees conducted a 3D scan of the interior public spaces of
the Library. The scan was part of Google's Project Tango which provides a
detailed layout of the library interior within the Google Maps application.
The Library hosted a successful Atari Party on June 14. Various arcade games
were available to play in the Teen Area.
The children's librarians recently held a series of programs at Lakewood Park.
Funded by a California State Library grant, 164 residents in the north side of
Sunnyvale were able to participate in storytimes. Many of the parents and
caregivers told staff that they had never taken part in a storytime before. Staff was
happy to introduce them to the activities that the Library offers.
