The May 9th meeting of the Mayor’s Commission on Communities of Color was called to order
at 5:30 pm by Chair Deanna Reder
1. Roll Call
Present: Deanna Reder, Jenny Van Sickle, Louren Yzaguirre (Virtual), Tanzeem Ali (virtual)
Absent: Ephraim Nikoi
Also Present: Rebecca Scherf
2. Approval of July 11th Minutes
MOTION by Van Sickle, second by Yzaguirre, carried to approve.
3. Sue Heskin – Superior Public Library
Director Heskin gave update on the library including discussion on comprehensive assessment
and online accessibility. Heskin also mentioned diversity training, diversity of staff, and
enhancing library collection.
4. Finalize one pager
Commission discussed possible edits. MOTION by Van Sickle to approve with edits. Second by
Ali. Approved.
5. Webpage recommendations for MCoCC
Commission discussed wishes for MCoCC website. Chief of Staff Scherf to work with IT to
accomplish what commission is looking for. MOTION by Van Sickle, seconded by Ali.
6. Policy recommendations to create more accessibility to BIPOC Community
Events/Businesses
MOTION by Reder to postpone due to time
7. Any other business
Ali asks to invite Chaquana Mcintyre re: feedback on Juneteenth Sponsorship
Van Sickle advises introducing to HRC stipends for commissioners
Chair Reder asks to see where budget is at as there are items commission needs for tabling such
as a tablecloth. Scherf agreed to bring to next meeting.

THURSDAY, July 11th, 2022

The meeting of the Mayor’s Commission on Communities of Color was called to order at 5:30PM

2. Approval of June 6th Minutes

3. Update from SPD Chief Nick Alexander
Update from Chief Alexander regarding the community coordinator position. Officer Jen Stank is
fielding calls for citizens who are struggling with drug addiction, mental health, and other issues to
avoid police involvement.
Chair Reder asked about data tracking for calls. Chief confirmed that it is happening.
Vice Chair Nikoi asked about possibility for volunteers to help community coordinator and also
about grants for the treatment program. Chief stated that they have 5 years of funding, 40-50 clients
per year, and a 40% success rate.
Chief discussed ABLE training and training on biases. They will take 2 year refresher course.
4. Chair Reder’s Research on Similar Commissions
Chair Reder gave a power point presentation on her research on similar commissions: “Who Are We
?” It discussed the mission statement of the commission, what happens at meetings, what has been
accomplished so far, future goals of commission, and how one can join.

• Lexington, KY Mayor’s Commission for Racial Justice and Equality
• Coalition of Communities of Color in Portland, OR
• Commission on Racial Equity and Inclusion in Baton Rouge, LA

Vice-Chair Nikoi and Commissioner Ali talked about meeting citizens out in the community, so they
can place faces with names.
Vice-Chair Nikoi brought up funds for events and stated we should not just sponsor but organizations
should apply for funds.

Policy recommendations for BIPOC community events (on budgeting) for next meeting.
