OFFICIAL MINUTES SYKESVILLE PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION February 22, 2024 Present: Alex Ries Eric Valenstein Dan Gilbert Chris Sevick Nick Sheets Billy Shifflet Elizabeth Groff, Council Staff: Jana Antrobus Call to Order Alex Ries, Co-Chair, called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM. Approval of the Minutes Chair Ries motioned and Commissioner Sheets seconded to approve the January 25, Meeting Minutes. All voted in favor. Business 1. SPARC Logo approval Motion Chair Ries motioned and Commissioner Sevick seconded to approve the new logo design. All voted in favor. 2. Sykesville Skate Jam (April 27, 12 pm to 4 pm) SPARC, in partnership with Shrimptown Skateshop (Jason), are planning a skating competition event at South Branch Skate Park. • All SPARC Commissioners will be available to attend. • Participants will registrar (at no fee) at Shrimptown Skateshop. Participants will be limited to 50 with a minimum of 10. • Shrimptown Skateshop will provide judges and prizes. • SPARC will sell drinks (i.e., water, Gatorade, soda) and prepackaged snack food items (i.e., chips, granola bars) which may require additional trash cans. • A tent will be setup close to the skate park for competition judges. • Amplified sound from noon to 4pm to play music and to make announcements regarding the competition and event. • Sound system equipment will be provided by Co-chair Valenstein. • Will need to use power from the South Branch pavilion. • Shrimptown also expects some vendors to attend the event. The vendors will sell skateboarding merchandise. • Chair Ries will create a flyer and registration form and submit to staff for review. Wants to begin registration next week. • Post sign at Skate Park advertising the event. OFFICIAL MINUTES SYKESVILLE PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION February 22, 2024 • Event Schedule: o 10am - 12pm: Set up (tents with tables and chairs, sound system) o 12pm - 1pm: Participant check-in at SPARC tent and be able to practice o 1pm - 3pm: Competition (Skate Jam Format meaning 5 or so skaters skate at one time) o 2pm - 4pm: Prizes and free skate (with side skateboarding games) o 4pm - 5pm: Tear down o No rain date is scheduled 3. Easter Egg Hunt (March 29 10am to 12 pm) • Setup to begin at 8:30am • Volunteers confirmed by Co-Chair Valenstein and Commissioner Sevick • Display signs - 10 to 15 egg limit per child • Commission to attend: Chair Ries, Commissioner’s Sevick, Sheets and Town Staff. • Staff will print flyers for Summer Events and Scavenger Hunt Instructions for volunteers to add to grab bags. • ScavenEgger Hunt (March 29 to March 30) o Location - Burkett Park o Chair Reis and Commissioner Sevick will put out eggs on Thursday. o An 8 to 10 letter secret word will be chosen after meeting. o Chair Reis will create instruction flyer and provide to staff for printing. Town Updates: 1. Staff provided a rendering of a log cabin/fort structure that is being considered for an area along the Linear Trail near the basketball court. This structure would provide a location for SPARC to host a number of events including but not limited to nature presentation. A seating area is also planned in front of the structure. Natural elements would be used to construct the whole project. SPARC was unanimous in support of the project and will continue to consider other uses. Adjournment There being no other business, Co-chair Ries motioned and Co-chair Valenstein seconded to adjourn the meeting at 7:55 PM. All voted in favor.
