OFFICIAL SUMMARY OF JUNE 27, 2024 REGULAR PARKS AND RECREATION
MEETING (NO QUORUM)
The Sykesville Parks and Recreation (SPARC) meeting was held on Thursday, June 27,
2024. Commissioner Ries called the meeting to order at 7:00 P.M. in the Town House
Conference Room. There was not a quorum for this meeting.
PRESENT: Commissioners Alex Ries, Nick Sheets, and Billy Shifflet.
ABSENT: Commissioners Chris Sevick, Dan Gilbert, and Eric Valenstein. Council Member
Elizabeth Guroff
STAFF: Joseph Cosentini, Town Manager
Kerry Kavaloski, Town Clerk
MINUTES:
• May 23, 2024
As there was not a quorum at this meeting, the minutes were tabled until the July
25 meeting.
BUSINESS:
• July Movie
Commissioner Sevick will not be in attendance for the July movie.
Commissioner Sheets will run the snack shack. Commissioners Ries and
Shifflet will also be in attendance for the movie. Commissioner Ries will put
out and pick up the signs for the movie.
Joe Cosentini, Town Manager, will either find the missing cables or purchase
new cables.
• Food Donations
There was brief discussion regarding switching the food donation location.
This item was tabled until the July 25 meeting.
• Let Freedom Ring Parade
Commissioner Ries will meet the float at Sykesville Middle School before the
Parade to decorate the float. She asked for the flags to be put on the front
of the float and for the Uncle Sam hat to be sewn onto Sparky. There was a
discussion about using hooks on the wooden structure of the float to secure
the decorations.
Commissioner Sevick has volunteers to ride the float and candy to be passed
out.
• Music in the Park Update
Commissioner Sheets has three bands confirmed for the Music in the Park
series. Here ‘Til Sunday on September 7, Duffy and Roe on September 28,
and Liberty Road on October 5.
• There was a brief discussion about the SPARC email address.
TOWN UPDATES:
• Mr. Cosentini announced that the splash pad is very busy. Pavilion rentals
for Millard Cooper Park are full for the weekends. Week days are starting to
fill up as well.
• The Program Open Space application was submitted for repairs to the street
lights on Cooper Drive.
• The Town is waiting for the delivery of the Linear Trail Park structures. As
soon as they are delivered, the Town will work on installing them.
• There was a brief discussion of looking into a computer for the Movies in the
Park instead of a DVD player.
ADJOURN: There being no further business to come before SPARC, Commissioner
Ries motioned, and Commissioner Shifflet seconded to adjourn the
meeting at 7:15 P.M.
The motion carried unanimously.
