CITY OF URBANA, ILLINOIS SUSTAINABILITY ADVISORY COMMISSION City Council Chambers, Urbana City Building Tuesday, August 2, 2016 Commissioners Present: Chairperson Marya Ryan, Stacy Gloss, Beth Meschewski, Morgan Johnston, Todd Rusk, Andrew Stumpf Commissioners Absent: Vice Chair Stephen Wald Staff Present: Scott Tess Call to Order, Roll Call, and Declaration of Quorum The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. Scott Tess called the roll and a quorum was present. Changes to the Agenda There were no changes to the agenda. Approval of Minutes Motion was made by Ms. Johnston, second by Mr. Rusk, to approve the minutes from the May 3, 2016 meeting. Motion carried. Public Input There was no public input. Communications Staff Report Scott Tess gave the monthly Staff Report which included progress on the Climate Action Plan (CAP) Phase 2, highlighting the potential retrofit of existing outdoor lighting, Green Power Community awarding by U.S. EPA, bidding of installation of a solar array for the closed landfill, and Low Carbon Diet partnerships with local church groups. Associated with City Council and Mayoral Goals, Tess mentioned purchase of a full electric vehicle that will be assigned to the Recycling Coordinator. Additionally, an update on U-Cycle activities was provided that included a “Teens in Action” event and mention of a favorable Request for Proposals response for an October electronics recycling collection event. The Report stated September 6, 2016 as the next meeting date. Solar U-C Presentation from The Illinois Renewable Energy Conference Scott Tess shared a presentation on the Solar U-C program that he gave at The Illinois Renewable Energy Conference on July 21, 2016 at Illinois State University in Normal. The presentation described the success of the program including 140 site assessments and 81 contracts totaling 605 kw of installed capacity. The Commission discussed the information. Continuing Business Sustainability Advisory Commission Seats Commission members continued discussion of the pros and cons of having a special designation for a high school student to serve on the Commission and provide a youth perspective. The suggestion was made to consider alternate ways to engage youth in the mission and activities of the SAC. Staff will invite the person who made the initial request and the student to attend a meeting and discuss their ideas for effective youth engagement. New Business There was no new business. Announcements Mr. Stumpf announced the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service Museum on Main Street Water/Ways exhibition from July 16-August 27, 2016 at Museum of the Prairie, Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve, Mahomet. Ms. Johnston announced the iSEE Congress 2016 Energy 2030: Paths to a Sustainable Future scheduled for September 12-14, 2016 at the Alice Campbell Alumni Center on Campus. Ms. Johnston announced the 2016 Illinois Green Infrastructure Conference: Stormwater in the Urban Ecosystem on September 15, 2016 at the i-Hotel Conference Center in Champaign. Ms. Meschewski announced a household item drop off on August 5 and August 6, 2016 at 512 3rd Street in Champaign. Ms. Johnston noted that volunteers are needed for the Dump and Run event. Scott Tess announced the 30th Annual Regional Neighborhood Network Conference taking place September 29 – October 1, 2016 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Champaign. Mr. Rusk announced a free lunchtime clinic series Accomplishing Energy Savings in Your Organization on August 26, September 30, and October 28, 2016 at the Champaign County Economic Development Corporation in Champaign. Adjournment There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 8:38 p.m. This meeting was recorded.
