CITY OF VERONA PUBLIC SAFETY AND WELFARE COMMITTEE SEPTEMBER 8, 2014 VERONA CITY HALL MINUTES 1. Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Yurs at 6:03 p.m. 2. Roll Call: Members Present: Heather Reekie, Evan Touchett and Dale Yurs. Others Present: Bernie Coughlin, Police Chief; Bill Burns, City Administrator; Adam Sayre, Director of Planning & Zoning; Liz Doyle, Alderperson District 1; and Kami Scofield, City Clerk. 3. Approval of Minutes. Motion by Reekie, seconded by Touchett to approve the minutes from the August 25, 2014 meeting. Motion carried 3/0. 4. Discussion and possible action regarding an application for a Special Event Permit for the Homecoming Parade to be held on Friday, September 26, 2014 from Rita Mortenson of the Verona Area High School. Chief Coughlin provided information on the event stating that as many as three police officers will assist with the event and traffic control. The Police School Liaison Officer assists with coordinating the event. Motion by Touchett, seconded by Reekie to recommend that the Common Council approve the Special Event. Motion carried 3/0. 5. Discussion and possible action regarding the bicycle and pedestrian crossing on the 300 block of South Main Street. Ald. Yurs explained that this was discussed at a recent Committee of the Whole meeting but wanted to bring it to this committee to discuss if improvements could occur sooner than originally discussed, which was with the street improvements in 2015. Chief Coughlin provided information on the costs of these improvements and how the costs relate to the timing of improvements. The committee agreed that it would be best to wait to make improvements to the crossing when the streetscape improvements are done in early 2015. No action was taken on the item. 6. Discussion and possible action regarding private streets. Chief Coughlin explained that staff had further discussions regarding private streets. The committee discussed making adjustments to the City’s current ordinance to address private streets and directed staff to proceed with updating the ordinance. 7. Adjournment.
