Agenda

Traffic Committee Agenda DPW Conference Room 4243 Remembrance Rd. NW. Tuesday, June 9, 2026 2:00 PM Committee Members: Scott Conners, P.E., City Engineer / Travis Mabry, P.E., Assistant City Engineer / Gary Postema, DPW Director / Keith Mankel, Police Chief / Shay Gallagher, City Manager / Melanie Grooters, City Commissioner Agency Representatives: Jason Cole, P.E., MDOT / Matt Van Dyke, Grand Rapids Traffic Safety Discussion Items 1. Kinney Speeding / Trucks: John Kinney, 2440 Kinney, is concerned about vehicles speeding and trucks on Kinney between 3 Mile and Remembrance. He is requesting that signing modifications and educational police warnings be considered to help address these concerns. 2. Springbrook Speeding: Carl Homrich, 3120 Springbrook, is concerned about vehicles speeding and lane discipline at the curve on Springbrook south and west of its intersection with West River. He was recently almost hit while walking across the street to get his mail by a speeding southbound to westbound vehicle that crossed the centerline of the blind curve. Mr. Homrich seems to recall this curve being marked with a centerline 40 years ago. He is requesting that the centerline be repainted on the curve to help drivers maintain lane discipline and speed control. 3. 4 Mile Sidewalk: Frank Carter, 2944 4 Mile, has requested that sidewalk be installed near Kenowa Hills High School and Middle School to aid in students walking to school. His wife and daughter currently walk along the shoulder of 4 Mile in the afternoon to come home from school. They do not walk in the morning because they feel that the road is too dangerous to navigate in low light. Mr. Carter would also like pedestrian safety at the intersection of 4 Mile and Hendershot to be improved, and The RAPID bus stop on the south side of the Page 1 of 18 intersection to be upgraded to a shelter. 4. Leonard Pedestrian Island: An elderly bike rider attempted to proceed straight across the Leonard pedestrian island, hit the curb at the jog within the island, flipped over their bike, and landed in a traffic lane on Leonard. Luckily, they were not hit by a vehicle. Discussion will occur on whether modifications to the City’s pedestrian refuge islands should occur, such as painting the curb at the jogs in the islands. 5. Alpine Estates Park Gate: The gate on the east side of Alpine Estates Park was recently struck by a driver and destroyed. Previously this gate has been closed with a sign on it stating “Park Entrance on 3 Mile.” Discussion will occur regarding whether the gate should be replaced to avoid potential cut-through traffic, or whether it should not be replaced, in an effort to provide easier access to the park by neighborhood residents. 6. Informational Items: 3 Mile at Alpine No Truck Signs: The DPW recently enlarged the No Trucks sign on 3 Mile at Alpine and moved it further east to be closer to the intersection. This was done in an effort to better communicate to drivers that trucks are not permitted on 3 Mile, between Alpine and Walkent, unless they are on the last leg of a local delivery. 7.
