CALL TO ORDER Mr. Trager, Chair, called the meeting to order at 4:30 p.m. Committee Members Present: Howard Trager, Sam Nebb, Mary Kastner, and Veronica McCue. Committee Members Not in Attendance: Sharon Lascola, Sally Schwartz, and Jose Soto. II. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Mr. Trager led the Pledge of Allegiance. III. SELECTION OF CHAIR AND VICE CHAIR SAC-059 Prior to taking up the nominations for Chair and Vice Chair, Mr. Trager expressed his gratitude to Ms. Edwards for her consideration of him at the last meeting by postponing it. He was thankful everything worked out well. At this time, Mr. Trager opened the floor for nominations for Chair and Vice Chair. Chair Mr. Nebb nominated Mr. Trager for Chair and Ms. Kastner seconded the nomination. There were no other nominations. A motion was made by Ms. Kastner, seconded by Ms. McCue, and unanimously passed 4-0, to close the nominations for Chair. Sharon Lascola, Sally Schwartz, and Jose Soto were not in attendance at the meeting. Mr. Trager accepted the nomination to be the Chair of the Senior Advisory Committee. Vice Chair Mr. Nebb nominated Ms. McCue for Vice Chair and Ms. Kastner seconded the nomination. There were no other nominations. A motion was made by Mr. Nebb, seconded by Ms. Kastner, and unanimously passed, to close the nominations for Vice Chair. Ms. McCue accepted the nomination to be the Vice Chair of the Senior Advisory Committee. IV. APPROVAL OF AGENDA A motion was made by Ms. Kastner, seconded by Mr. Nebb, and unanimously passed 4-0, to approve the agenda as presented. Sharon Lascola, Sally Schwartz, and Jose Soto were not in attendance at the meeting. V. APPROVAL OF MINUTES SAC-060 Attachments: SAC Minutes 3-9-17 Final SAC Minutes 6-15-17 (Final) A motion was made by Mr. Nebb, seconded by Ms. Kastner, and unanimously passed 4-0, to approve the minutes as written. VI. STAFF UPDATES Ms. Meridith Tuckwood presented an update on services and programs such as Test Your Memory, Let's Talk Soon, cell phone & computer training, Matter of Balance, Newsletter, STAR and staff traing. She noted that several surveys were conducted in early June at various senior events. With regard to the STAR program addresses by Ms. Tuckwood, Mr. Trager asked for the total number of riders. In response, Ms. Tuckwood informed him that she didn't have the information with her but indicated that it is over 400 people. Mr. Trager spoke about a problem that Village Walk residents were having in receiving program information. especially since they don't receive water bills from the Village. Ms. Tuckwood indicated that she is taking steps with the Post Office to try and correct that issue, and will relate any updates on it to Mr. Trager as she learns of them. Ms. Tuckwod announced that she will be attending the Florida Village of Wellington Page 2 Senior Advisory Committee Action Summary - Final August 1, 2017 Conference of Aging in Orlando at the end of the month. Mrs. Edwards announced that the Village of Wellington has a Hometown Hero program and that each month a different resident is selected and that this month Ms. McCue was selected. A clip of Ms. McCue as the Hometown Hero was shown. VII. OLD BUSINESS SAC-058 Ms. McCue informed the committee that since the last meeting, the S.A.M Committee has had three additional meetings together. Ms. McCue suggested that the Committee reaches out to the business community and ask for help from other organizations to find tutors. Mr. Trager suggested that they have an education business round table discussion and get some of the leaders in the community to particate in the discussion. Ms. Edwards asked if Mr. Trager wanted that as an action item and if he wanted her to facilitate it. Mr. Nebb suggested that some members of the Village Council be invited so they can participate as well. VIII. NEW BUSINESS Ms. McCue said she wanted to ask that the Senior Advisory Committee make a recommendation to the Village Council about supporting a bill by their State representative to remove texting while driving as a secondary offense and make it a primary offense in Wellington; however, this does not fall under their Committee's guidelines. Mrs. Edwards indicated that she would take this information and pass it along to the Public Safety Committee as a recommendation. IX. PUBLIC COMMENT Ms. Karen Gabriel wanted to know why only two schools had been mentioned when there are five elementary schools in the Village. Ms. McCue explained that they reached out to all five schools; however, only New Horizons responded. They will be instituting a pilot program first using two schools for comparison to find out what the needs are so they can get the program running properly. Village of Wellington Page 3 Senior Advisory Committee Action Summary - Final August 1, 2017 X. BOARD COMMENTS Ms. McCue stated she was happy to be back and that she was nominated as Vice Chair. She is excited to be working alongside her favorite mentor. Mr. Trager gave thanks to everyone for their support, and that they have been given what they need to start the mentoring program. Mr. Nebb wanted to find out when the Council will recommend something to them that will specifically help seniors rather than just with schools or other such things. Mr. Trager informed him that at this time the Senior Advisory Committee has only been tasked with the mentoring program. Ms. McCue felt that they needed to fill up the seats with seniors coming to the Committee meeting. Ms. Karen Gabriel spoke noting that she is a member of the Wellington Senior Club and felt that the Senior Advisory Committee was not being publicized enough. The Committee discussed the problems with getting seniors to attend their meetings, and what could be done to involve the members of the Wellington Seniors Club, i.e, having a liaison from the Club or perhaps have Mr. Trager give a report to the Club at their meetings. A suggestion was also made for Committee members to bring in neighbors to the meetings. Ms. Estelle Rubin spoke and felt that the Club members are aware of the Senior Advisory Committee, but did not think they would come unless there was an incentive or an issue that specifically interested them. Ms. Edwards asked for any suggestions on how they can get the meeting information out. A suggestion was made that Ms. Tuckwood could include the information in her publication. Mr. Trager stated that they will go back to the drawing board to see how they can get people to come to the meeting. Ms. Edwards mentioned that Saturday, August 5th, the Community Services Department will be hosting the Back to School Community Block Party and invited the Senior Advisory Committee to attend.
