SPECIAL RECESS MEETING

Chairperson Barczak called the meeting to order.
B. ROLL CALL
Present 5- Ald. Barczak, Ald. Vitale, Ald. Lajsic, Ald. Probst, and Ald. Reinke
C. DISCUSSION ITEMS
2017-0105 Discussion on Communication from City Administrator requesting approval to
fill the vacant position of Electrical Mechanic I in the Building/Inventory and
Electrical Division, Electrical Section.
This item was discussed.
2017-0106 Discussion regarding the purchase of water filters for lead abatement.
The Director of Public Works informed the Board that the Water Utility will be purchasing
water filters and supplying them free to residents affected by construction or repairs to the water
system. Even though the City’s water meets the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources
and the United States Environmental Protection Agency rules and regulations on a regular basis,
it has been reported that during times of construction and/or repairs that levels of lead can
increase and exceed DNR and EPA standards. The Director of Public Works felt, and the Board
agreed, that erring on the side of safety for our residents was a priority and one of the most
important issues we all face. The installation and use of the water filters will be voluntary.
Estimated cost is $10-15,000 for 2017.
This item was discussed.
2017-0107 Discussion regarding update on garbage and recycling issues.
The Director of Public Works updated the Board that we were close to submitting processing
proposals for review and selection. The selection will be difficult since there are so many
factors that will enter into it and many of those can only be estimated. Alderman Lajsic asked
that staff meet with Allied Resource (West Allis Salvage) and determine if there was any way to
assist them. Next was discussion regarding the garbage contract which expires at the end of the
year. Our current contractor, Advance Disposal, has been a good contractor over many years.
Public Works checked with other communities and the tipping fee is competitive. Bidding the
contract in fall is no guarantee that the City will get a better price. The Board directed that the
Director of Public Works negotiate a contract extension with Advance Disposal.
This item was discussed.
