City and Department Updates Ray Coffey: June 14th is official opening day for Myers Memorial Pool. Online pass sales will be available this Friday, 3/13. Season passes, payment plans, etc. will be available. Family pass is $120. Day passes will be available on site. Discount rates for seniors and Winooski school students. We are working with Greater Burlington YMCA to hire lifeguards. Front Desk staff positions for the Pool will be posted after City Council approves them on Monday, 3/16. Parks Planning Process: We are in the survey part of the process. Commissioners will be receiving link to the survey. Can also be found in SHCP Commission minutes from February. Presentation – Service Rendered (Landry Skatepark proposal) Skatepark at Landry is popular, invites community and relationship-building. Ramps are aging, and right now seems like a great time for upgrades. A refresh to the park would generate excitement, youth camps, artis murals, competitions. Currently, skaters take on the burden of cleaning and some repair of skatepark features. Foliage and brush overgrowth also impedes use of the skatepark. Additional upgrade suggestions include additional seating, some path paving, cleaning supplies and lighting so skating can happen after dark. Next steps: l site visit w/ builder l accurate lighting estimate l finalize budget and plans l present finished plans to SHCP Commission l Determine how to fund the build *see document attachments with skatepark mock-up ideas, upgrade features, needs: https://www.winooskivt.gov/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Item/2503?fileID=2554 A lot of skaters prefer the Winooski skate park to Burlington’s. Burlington paid a lot for their A-Dog Skatepark, but this doesn’t require any high-tech features. It’s important that the features are all built from materials that withstand the weather/elements. Features should be pressure-treated wooden frame with galvanized steel. Youth camps are a draw; youth feel empowered and adept at the skatepark, and employs camp instructors from the skateboard community. Potential cost: $50-$60,000. This is a huge price tag, so suggested next step: What are the levels of costs and needs? What are some funders/grants available to the skatepark with ideas about what can Winooski potentially match? It might be incremental rather than all upgrades at once. From Ray: Explanation about City’s funding for parks. It is not SHPC’s decision to approve funding or projects, but it is the residents of Winooski who make that decision. The Omnes Parks Planning Project will be wrapping up in the next few months, and the parks survey will be vital to fill out. Can absolutely do ASAP: cutting back foliage, cleaning supplies, even an inexpensive shed; the City can absolutely make this happen. As the snow melts and the skateboarders assess the state of the skatepark features, email Ray photos of those in need of repair and he hopes to get Public Works to do the maintenance as they have capacity. City ordinance states that all parks are open dawn-dusk, so installing lighting is another process. Temporary lighting might be an option for occassional night skates.
