Yukon Park Board Minutes Regular Meeting Wednesday , February 16 , 2022 6:00 P.M. Huckaba Building 532 W. Main The City of Yukon Park Board met for their regular meeting on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, 6:00 p.m. at the Huckaba Bldg., 532 W. Main, Yukon, OK. Roll Call : (Present) Joe Edwards, Ward 1 Joe Baumann, Ward 4 Stephen Nelson, Ward 2 Cathy Wright – Ward 3 Jason Hammett- At Large Others Present: Chris Lucas, Ryan McClure, Shelly Selby and Andrea Griffin Item 1: Approval of the minutes Wednesday, January 19, 2022 Jason Hammett moved to approve the minutes from January 19, 2022, Joe Baumann seconded the motion. The vote: Ayes: Edwards, Baumann, Nelson, Wright and Hammett Nays: None The Vote 5-0 Motion Carried Item 2: Director Chris Lucas introduced Assistant Director Ryan McClure Ryan McClure came from the Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation Department where he was a Recreation Operations Supervisor over aquatics, fitness, food & beverage, and recreation center operations. He is a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) through the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and is the President-Elect for the Oklahoma Recreation and Parks Society (ORPS). He has 10 years of recreation leadership experience including nonprofit, for profit, corporate, and municipal government experience. Ryan is passionate about making a positive impact in the Yukon community by helping Yukon residents improve their quality of life through recreation programs and special events. Item 3: Parks and Recreation Department Reports and Projects Updates Jackie Cooper Gym is doing well with increased traffic. Adult male basketball starting in March, normally has 8 teams, hope to increase enrollment by two more teams and keep the gym open longer. Interest in recreational and competitive basketball will increase use of gym. Homeschool PE Winter session has 36 enrolled, while Spring usually has 36 also, doing well staying filled. Spring break coming up with themed days that will include archery, disc golf, dodge ball and nerf wars. Good to see people coming back and utilizing gym with basketball, pickle ball and P. O. After multiple delays the gym curtain has been delivered but being stored until it can be installed, hopefully soon. It will take at least 3 days and limited to one court. This far in advance we will be able to inform the public of any restrictions due to installation. Storage rooms project still being upgraded by removing some of the unused lockers in both men’s and women’s lockers. Joe Edwards confirmed with Chris Lucas there would be press coverage of the completed gym projects. Mayor Selby then confirmed with Chris that the homeless would still be allowed to shower there at no cost. Yukon Community Center programs doing well and increasing also. Bunco is back and new cornhole league available. Former program Kids Night out was rebranded as Parent’s Night Out and went from 5 enrolled to 17 enrolled with several fun theme nights planned. Parent’s Night Out will be on the fourth Friday of the month year round. Cooking classes continue to be popular and fill to capacity each time offered. Spring Break Camp coming up and will be at capacity when 30 are enrolled. Thinking of ways to increase capacity and meet the needs of our community. Storage projects are taking shape at community center also, by removing some of the men’s lockers to utilize space and adding double doors to gym. North side of building has water issues, looking at replacing slanted sidewalk and resealing the walls, then restripe the parking lot. Dale Robertson Center busy as usual. Chris stated he just attended their Valentine Party that had 150 in attendance and was a blast. Would love to capture patron’s stories of their amazing lives and hope to soon publicize with community. Tomorrow night is the Senior Show Case talent show at 6:00 p.m., other upcoming events will be next Wednesday, February 23rd, Sass & Class Portraits, similar to the former Glamour Shots, followed by a Mardi Gras party on March 1st, Fat Tuesday. Projects include cleaning and upgrading game room utilizing that area, possibly replacing both front and back kitchen floors. Special Operations Events so far have been the Daddy Daughter Dance which over 700 attended, mimicked our 2020 attendance. Chocolate Festival was a success with 19 vendors and planning already how to improve the next one. Big news our Trout Fish Out will be held at Welch Pond located at 615 Annawood on March 5th. We are the only fishing derby that offers trout. Also, new this year we are purchasing trout food like they are fed on the farm to keep them active and hopefully lots will be caught the day of, 8:00-11:00a.m. Taste of Yukon will take place on March 31st at Dale Robertson Center. Athletic Youth Basketball that was acquired from Yukon’s Optimist Club first year ends March 5, then first full season of Youth Baseball starts March 7th, ages 3-12 years old. Exploring softball possibilities in the future. Aquatics getting ready with filling Kimbell Bay this Friday & Saturday as a test since it was last used two years ago, then we’ll do the same at City Splash. Everything goes well, they’ll be P. O. Joe Baumann asked if two pools are opened, will they be able to properly staff them to stay open. Chris explained not much competition on this side of town and with Ryan’s expertise, position with ORPS, knows people state wide along with Justin Chapman’s knowledge and passion, they’ve already made contact with high school and other options in the works. Overall, numbers are up at all facilities, people want to get out and get involved and back to some sort of normal. Excited for our department. Joe Edwards asked about sports agreements upgrades. Chris explained agreements were reviewed by City Attorney & City Manager and now will be considered lease agreements and executed by organization, City Manager and then City Council. Mayor Selby asked if Pickle Ball is still popular. Chris responded by yes, still going strong at YCC and JCG, would like to upgrade tennis courts to be both pickle ball and tennis friendly. She also stated Yukon Community Support Foundation will donate $22,000.00 towards a disc golf course, it will take a while, committee will have to decide on park and plans of actual course. Stephen Nelson stated that someone in soccer club approached him about donating lights, Chris explained Yukon Soccer Club would have to submit a proposal to the city for discussion. Item 3: Open Discussion Cathy Wright Thanked Park & Recreation staff for their hard work and was looking forward to spring and summer events, welcomed Ryan and new possibilities. Jason Hammett was looking forward to chaotic times being behind him and looking forward to Spring sports and some type of normal, he also thanked the staff for their hard work and looking forward to Summer, welcomed Ryan. Stephen Nelson welcomed Ryan and was excited what could be accomplished moving Parks & Recreation forward in the future. Excited about upcoming Spring sports. Joe Baumann welcomed Ryan, was glad to see the bike path on Garth Brooks was almost complete. Joe Edwards welcomed Ryan and excited for the future of Parks & Recreation and impact they’ll have on our community. No updates of the Freedom Trail upgrade project.
