Park Board Yukon Park Board Minutes August 21, 2024 The Yukon Park Board met in regular session at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, August 21st, at the Mary Huckaba Building, 532 West Main Street, Yukon, OK 73099. I. Call to Order Joe Edwards, Chairman – Ward 1, called the meeting to order. II. Roll Call ROLL CALL: (Present) Joe Baumann, Vice Chairman – Ward 4 Tim Rhodes – At Large Stephen Nelson – Ward 2 Carrie Sharp – Ward 3 OTHERS PRESENT: Ryan McClure, Parks and Recreation Director Ashley Geddes, Assistant Parks and Recreation Director Kahlil Garner, Parks and Recreation Office Coordinator III. Visitors/Special Guests/Public Comments None IV. Approval of the minutes from July 17, 2024 The board began by reading the minutes from the July 17th meeting. Joe Edwards motioned, Carrie Sharp moved to accept the minutes, and Stephen Nelson seconded. Passed. V. Parks and Recreation Department Report and Project Update City of Yukon | P. O. Box 850500 | Yukon, OK 73085 Park Board Parks and Recreation Department Reports and Project Updates 1. Staff Updates a. New City Manager – Mike Castro b. Michael Hewitt – named Acting Parks Superintendent 2. Staff Work Overview a. Special Projects – Christmas in the Park setup has begun i. Split crew with Parks b. Parks – mowing, weed eating, watering (sod, grass, trees), picking up/dumping trash, working flowerbeds, trimming trees, inspecting playgrounds, numerous other park projects c. Special Events – Ice Cream Social (200 in attendance on 8/15), Rock the Route (8/29), ribbon cuttings/grand openings (FTP, Taylor Park), preparing for fall events d. Athletics – t-ball, baseball, flag football seasons e. Aquatics – City closed for the summer, Kimbell open weekends through Labor Day, splash pads open through Labor Day f. Facility staff – facility operations, wrapped up summer programs, preparing for fall programs, facility projects g. Admin staff – projects, hiring 3. Projects a. Recently Completed Projects i. Freedom Trail Playground and Splashpad – ribbon cutting last night ii. DRC HVAC project iii. JCG Doors b. Current projects i. Taylor Park Field – field surface upgrades, striped for 2 fields, painted goal posts, added goal post padding, added new signage (large and small) with a nod towards SWCS and Patriot Field, fixed scoreboard, added portable scoreboard for 2 field, new player benches, added fan bleachers on west side, added a sound system, added gates for press box to enhance safety, replaced picnic tables, big clean up of area and storage areas 1. Grand opening on Tuesday for opening night regular season games (inflatables, sports activities, Chisholm the Cheetah, music City of Yukon | P. O. Box 850500 | Yukon, OK 73085 Park Board ii. YCC basketball goal lifts – electrical adjustment needed, everything has been replaced iii. YCC interior doors and window into gym – windows coming in today iv. Hilcrest Park playground, swings, shade structures c. Upcoming projects i. Kimbell Bay pool – gutters, parking lot, full remodel, full replacement ii. Sunrise softball fields 4. Special Events a. KOCO on the Road Tour (7/18) i. Live news, carnival games/activities, archery, live music, Yukon business vendors, food trucks b. Wrapped up Friday Fun Days and Concerts in the Park c. Ice Cream Social (8/15) – 200 in attendance d. Taylor Park Field grand opening on 8/27 e. Rock the Route on 8/29 f. Busy fall season – 4 events in October, 3 events in November 5. Miscellaneous a. Fall recreation programs start in September b. Just like KOCO event, Parks and Recreation assists with: i. Czech Fest ii. Easter on the Prairie iii. Yukon Soccer Club iv. BMX v. RC Club vi. Yukon Horseshoe Club vii. YCAA softball c. Quality of Life department i. Last night 1. Ribbon cutting 2. Flag football preseason games 3. Fall baseball 4. Facilities operating City of Yukon | P. O. Box 850500 | Yukon, OK 73085 Park Board I. New Business None II. Open Discussion i. Stephen Nelson said he is grateful for the programs and events; awesome work is being done. Excited about Rock the Route and the opening of Taylor Park. He will continue to champion the P&R department to the community. ii. Joe Baumann enjoyed the ribbon cutting at Freedom Trail Splash Pad; great job and keep up the excellent work. iii. Carrie Sharp is excited about everything done and the community support. She is looking forward to the upcoming events. iv. Joe Edwards excited about the Freedom Trail opening. He believes the park looks great and is impressed with Ryan's leadership and staff. v. Tim Rhodes enjoys bragging about the department and seeing the passion all the staff have for what they do. The parks look great. III. Date & time of next meeting: Wednesday, September 18th, 2024, at 6 p.m. at the Mary Huckaba Building at 532 West Main Street in Yukon.
